McCarthy Announces Support For A Police Chokehold Ban | Talking Points Memo

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said he would support a police chokehold ban, which was proposed in a police reform package put forward by House Democrats on Monday.

Progress. The bill that Harris and Booker put together in the Senate which is mirrored in the House by Bass (my MOC) and others is actually a very reasonable, focused and almost modest bill. Some Republicans in the Senate have noticed. Basically, I don’t think Mitch wants his purple state Senators to get hit for voting down a ban on choke holds in places like NC, GA and AZ.

This just means MM has promised to bury the bill.

I’m not sure he can. How do Tillis, Perdue, Collins, Cornyn, McSally vote ‘no’ on banning chokeholds and not absolutely eat it on e-day with high minority and suburban white turnout? Dems did win the KY Gov and LA Gov races with a fairly small number of counties anchoring the way. They just got huge margins and turnout out of those counties and didn’t get absolutely blasted in red counties.

McCarthy is dumber than a box of rocks. Did he really know what he voted on?

Bury it in committee I assume, and if one of the senators you mention has to vote ‘no’ in a committee vote, few are going to notice or remember. Even if the bill escapes the senate there’s always the veto.

That’s a start but what about no-knock warrants? What about mandatory body cameras? We need a comprehensive reform bill, not something that merely eliminates one heinous act.

Pardon me if I don’t drop my jaw that Republicans (or at least one Republican) made a statement that choking people is bad. I mean, wow, these people have lowered the bar so much that this is promising?

Scott has been at work on the “Justice Act” package and said in an NBC News interview with Craig Melvin on Thursday that he has been working on police reform since 2015

Take your time, Tim. It’s not like this is an important, urgent, critical issue (for Rethuglicans).

Rocks (and stones) everywhere, boxed, bagged, or uncontained, resent that statement.

McCarthy (R-CA) said he would support a police chokehold ban

“It’s unnecessary,” he said. “In my district the police just shoot 'em. It’s part of our ‘no touch, no cooties’ policy.”

Fun Fact: In 2015, police in Kern County, California, killed more people per capita than in any other American county! “We’re Number One,” they chanted.

Mitch can read a poll.
And it always makes me smile when news articles use this to proceed or followed Sen. Tim Scott’s name: “Senate Republicans nominated the party’s only black senator”.
