McCarthy Aims For Wednesday Vote On Debt Ceiling Budget Deal – TPM – Talking Points Memo

Just as details of the deal struck between the White House and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) came to light over the holiday weekend so did grumblings from the far-right wing of the Republican Party.

Joe Biden is really good at presidenting.

Part of why Biden appears really good is because of who we are comparing him to.

That said, considering the hand he has, he is the best at it since at least Bill Clinton if not Harry Truman.

The reason we are skipping LBJ when discussing being good at “presidenting” is because it includes foreign policy.

Despite Vietnam, LBJ is still in the Top 5. The '64 and '65 Civil Rights Acts are utterly transformational, and they don’t happen without him.

Don’t forget Medicare and Medicaid.

Yup learns from experience. When the GOP pulled this same stunt during the Obama Presidency, Obama thought the GOP were reasonable politicians and could be negotiated with. He found out the GOP is not, and can not be reasonable.

Biden and staff remembered that. Thus going big on the Inflation Reduction Act and the no negotiations on the Debt Ceiling.

Let the GOP nibble around the edges for a little, and game over.

I think Biden got what he needed to get and is smart enough to know that you don’t spike the football until you are in the end zone and the points are noted on the scoreboard. Don’t discount the GOP’s potential to still screw this up.

In the meantime, Trump must be fuming. He was the big loser in this agreement.

Republicans took the economy hostage and its a Dem win because they didn’t get all that much. This isn’t a deal, it’s extortion, Republicans just didn’t get much out of it.

And is the student loan thing going to get shut down, that’s a bomb that’s going to go off on a lot of families finances

Richard Nixon just before his death claimed their were two necessary presidents.

The first necessary president according to Nixon was LBJ for the reasons you give. That is according to Nixon, only Southern Democrat LBJ could have gotten Civil Rights passed and that, again according to Nixon, that was necessary for America to be one nation. Nixon called LBJ’s accomplishment the most important since Lincoln won the Civil War.

The second necessary president according to Nixon was Nixon himself because “only he could go to China” given his reputation as such a virulent anti-communist.

Nixon also pointed out that while the two were necessary, they also both made the biggest unnecessary mistakes any president has made in recent history. LBJ with Vietnam. Nixon said only LBJ, who wanted 100% of the vote, was not satisfied with the 1964 largest popular landslide in human history, would have tried to make Vietnam work instead of cutting his losses in 1964 and getting out.

Nixon also accepted his own faults, Watergate. While denying guilt, accepted the fact that his own personality defects, most notably his feeling of inferiority that fed his paranoia, resulted in his administration causing Watergate which has affected American politics and society like nothing else but the Vietnam War.

While I disagree with Nixon and China, I agree with him about LBJ and Civil Rights. That only LBJ, not only as a Southern Democrat but as someone who grew up in poverty and experienced as a teacher of minorities, could and would have committed to civil rights as LBJ did.

One of Biden’s strengths seems to be that he is OK with people getting the press they want as long as he (Biden) gets the thing he actually needs.

His landslide victory was in part being there for the country when Kennedy was killed. This gave LBJ a lot of room for maneuvering

He sure is. The republicans either vote for the bipartisan deal that Biden negotiated (and lasts for two years - through the 2024 election) or they block it (which would require virtually all Republican house members voting against it) and destroy the US (and international) economy. He then invokes the 14th amendment and ignores the debt ceiling. The GOP would probably sue and then the conservative majority on the USSC can decide whether they, also, want to participate in the Great Destruction. If it gets to the court of course we’re all screwed, but it would still be a technical win for the Biden administration.

I have to give Nixon credit for
The Origins of EPA | US EPA
We celebrate EPA’s “birthday” every December 2. What actually happened on December 2, 1970?
A. President Nixon signed Reorganization Plan No. 3 calling for the establishment of an Environmental Protection Agency.
B. The U.S. Senate confirmed William Ruckelshaus as EPA’s first Administrator.
C. Administrator Ruckelshaus signed EPA Order 1110.2 creating the initial organization of EPA.

LBJ was not shy about asking for what he wanted. If he says he wants more room in his pants for his dick, you give him more room for his dick in your pants.
