Massachusetts has become a hot spot of coronavirus infections, drawing the concern of federal officials and promises of aid from hard-hit New York as the state’s death toll prepares to double in less than a week.
Our daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren (aged 4 and 1) arrived yesterday in a close Boston suburb to live with that set of grandparents, so they could get some childcare while working from home – our daughter works for Legal Aid in Manhattan, our son-in-law for NYC public health. They were going to come here to us in the Berkshires, but our son was so emphatic that they not join us that, that plan was nixed. Our son is a doctor at Mt. Sinai (who had a mild case and is now part of a trial that reports his high titers). He wanted them to stay in place, even though they couldn’t. They were in the midst of moving when all this hit – a maelstrom of unfortunate timing. Lots of family drama. People trying their best. I just hope I get to hug my grandchildren again, and that all are safe
I am a MA resident and I don’ understand why Baker doesn’t require people to wear mask when outside their homes. Some local governments have made the orders, but it should be statewide at this point.
Our son lives in a high rise in Boston and has been very happy with Gov. Baker and Mayor Walsh. They have been taking Covid seriously and while some family insists he leave the city he believes he is as safe there as anywhere. He’s a whole lot better off than we are here in Florida with Trump’s mini me Desantis.
It’s so hard, and yes, people are trying their best - trying to make the right decisions.
A few weeks back, my elderly mother wanted me to go get my daughter in Brooklyn and bring her back home to rural Pennsylvania. It’s good that I didn’t listen to my mother. My daughter was already infected with the virus. She’s better now, but she still has her ups and downs - both emotionally and physically.
Baker hasn’t gone further because he’s a Republican. A relatively responsible Republican, but still…
I take a walk along the Charles every evening so I don’t go stir crazy (fully outfitted with mask, gloves, and glasses) and I’ve seen young couples with babies and children, none wearing any PPE.
I’ve also seen groups of young people running together, again without PPE. Yeah, no particles of anything flying there.
It makes me crazy.
I am thinking of both your families. Decisions are decisions. It is always more important to know that it is HOW we RESPOND to events, rather than the event itself. I wish you all the best!
I am unhappily surprised to hear this, as I thought for the most part we’ve been more responsible than a lot of others places, and the stay at home situation has been basically under effect for about a month. So it’s disconcerting to see the situation unfolding like this.
While there have of course still been people not taking it as seriously as they should (as others have mentioned above) I was still hopeful that enough were doing a decent enough job to stem the tide.
It’s hard to really be connected to what’s going on, even in my own neighborhood. I don’t have a Boston Globe subscription, only WaPo, so I have a better understanding of the national scene than what’s going on locally. I feel for our hospital workers.
