Masks Have Somehow Become Yet Another Fake Political Debate | Talking Points Memo

If you heard a loud “woosh”ing noise around lunchtime Friday, it might have been the sound of AMC executives flicking their phones in unison, reading through angry tweets and emails about their failed attempt to escape the news cycle.

The Johns are huge nerds, that’s why I love 'em.

Once again, I am confused.

This line in the article:

"And just like vaccines, much of the country has no interest in expert opinion on COVID-19. "

Is that Shuham’s opinion? Or attributed to someone else? For the number of people complying including those complaining when others are not, “much of” sounds like an exaggeration.

You can run but you can’t hide from Big Brother.

Aircraft filmed demonstrations in Dayton, Ohio; New York City; Buffalo and Philadelphia, among other cities, sending video footage in real time to control centers managed by Air and Marine Operations, a branch of Customs and Border Protection.

The footage was then fed into a digital network managed by the Homeland Security Department, called “Big Pipe,” which can be accessed by other federal agencies and local police departments for use in future investigations, according to senior officials with Air and Marine Operations.

And so the US has managed to become the only nation that has branded the most important tool in eradicating a virus that is killing over a thousand people a day a dangerous affront to personal liberty.

Soon they will be saying that labeling prescriptions with the medicine’s name and a set dosage is interfering with one’s right to take medicine as one pleases. More hilarity will ensue!

Somehow become another fake political debate? I think we all know how.

I bet if you drew a Venn diagram of anti-vaxxers, birthers and anti-maskers the overlap would generate quite a bit of concern for the general welfare of the country but hardly a surprise to anyone. The sad truth is that rightwing propagandists have played a whole lot of ignorant and uneducated people with lies and bogus claims for decades now. One day they’re all preppers and just when the whole country becomes preppers in some form or another due to COVID-19 they merely pick up their toolbox and move onto another scam they can rage about.

That was before Covid spiked in the South. We shall see.

It is not going to end well.

I think it should be in quotes and is attributable to Adam Aron of AMC. But…hard to say.

Good point. I tweaked the language slightly to reflect what I meant, that hyperpartisans have pushed the debate to the right.

I wear a mask and gloves everyday but the comparison with climate change is a stretch.

And can I just add that face coverings are cheap, or relatively so compared to the cost of the virus.

Even limited acceptance of masks makes a difference.

Fine don’t wear one outside on the street. Unless it’s packed ith people that’s fine. Enjoy the outdoors.

Just have one and wear it in a crowded area and indoors, like stores etc.

I mean shit. I hate them too. I never realized how much I depended on reading lipsnto hear people when there is background nois. The polite smile to allow someone through at the supermarket is gone, it’s weird.

We hired someone recently, the customary handshake is gone. At introduction we both sort of stepped back and quickly took off our masks so you could at least see our faces. Smiled and put them back on. It’s strange, felt weird to not show our faces.

I just came back from Walgreens and I saw three people straight away that weren’t wearing masks or practicing any kind of social distancing when standing in line or shopping in the aisles. People are either being extremely lax wanting to believe this thing has moved on in some way (wishful or magical thinking), don’t give a shit (anti-social behavior imo) or are making a political statement (hyper-partisan as Matt Shuman is saying). Take your pick. For some, not wearing a mask has replaced the fucking MAGAt hat and wearing a red tie past your pupik.
