Governor Maryland Larry Hogan (R) announced Tuesday that he’d delay the state’s April 28 primary until June 2, and hold a mail-in special election to fill the congressional seat vacated by the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD).
Is this going to be a wake up call that the whole voting/election enchilada has to be rethought, renovated, and ultimately revised? Can we start with the length of the election season? The reworking/ reauthorizing of the Voter Right’s Act? And by gum can we get everyone updated equipment?
Republicans have long ago crunched the numbers, and they’re happy with the current set-up, as it works to their advantage. Vote-by-mail nationwide would increase turnout significantly by lowering the barrier to voting. Liberal-leaning folks have the numbers, so any increase in their turnout means lost elections for republicans.
Maryland has eight congressional districts. Only one of them is involved in the special election. I have no problem imagining that the state is capable of getting mail ballots out to 12.5% of the state’s voters within the span of a couple weeks time, but also unable to to do so for 100% of the state’s voters in that same timespan.
The ACLU is also involved. We aren’t stupid anymore - we can see what they’re trying to do and there really will be hell to pay. The Democrats are not just going to sit on their hands and let the GOP steal this election.
You are the anti “yeah-but-his-minions-will-eat-that-up”.
Defeatism will be our undoing.
W/r/t these daily pressers of Trump (which he is using in place of rallies)…I had thought about alternative messaging…but on second thought, maybe Trump, the “Self-Impeacher” (Nancy) may be able to fuck himself over with these abominable displays of emotional depravity.
I wasn’t crazy about 100% vote-by-mail when it was introduced here in Washington. I miss the ritual of going to the polling place. Hell, I missed the clunky old voting machines with levers we had back in Philadelphia. But I’m absolutely a believer now. Vote by mail, everywhere, all the time.
The Texas Elections Code prescribes the forms of in-person and absentee voting. I don’t think we could eliminate in-person polling without substantial legislative revisions, and there are no provisions for elections officials to send out mail-in ballots except to individual voters who request an absentee ballot.
