Mary Trump Warns That President Is Not Bluffing About Potential Refusal To Accept Election Results | Talking Points Memo

Mary Trump, President Donald Trump’s niece, warned Thursday night that the President’s threat that he may not accept a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the November election should not be taken lightly.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1334169

Mary Trump knows her uncle as well as anyone but we need to remember that he is also disloyal and a bully. Any action he takes from the election on will depend on whether he gets sufficient support from cronies and hangers on and that will depend on how many think they can still ride his train.

ETA: stated another way, the jackals following Trump’s rogue lion are facing a prisoners dilemma. My own conjecture is that most will, quite wisely, choose betrayal; considering who Trump is and who they are, no other course of action seems likely.

A very important post. McConnell and Barr prop up Trump.

I absolutely don’t think he is bluffing and I never have. How far he gets depends on his enablers.
ETA: Same thought in first 3 posts.

Let me expand on this a bit:

I believe that the most significant enabler of Trump is the assumption of normalcy and the METAPHORS of normalcy. The GOP and Trump are destroying norms using the procedures commonly used in more normal times. Most people need some prompting to imagine things. Here is a tool: Imagine Trump, Barr and McConnell as three military commanders who are blowing up our country with weapons. Real Ones.

I expect he is fishing for a pardon or a guarantee of immunity from prosecution in return for vacating promptly.

Indeed, Trump may really be running scared because of pending litigation in the courts.

Maybe Biden should announce now that, after the election, he will issue Trump a full pardon if he’ll leave right now. He’ll even arrange the UHaul. That should make things interesting.

Or Biden could promise now to issue Trump a full pardon after the election (for the usual reasons, to spare the country, etc. etc.), but then after the election take it back! Hey, that’s the ticket!

Others have suggested that the President is known to say “crazy stuff,” but is not always meant to be taken seriously.

“To over-dramatize it, is to over-dramatize it,” Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) told a CNN reporter when asked about Trump’s remarks on Thursday.

Making light of Trump’s comments, Cramer said that “the President speaks in very extreme manners, occasionally.”

“I didn’t find what he said last night to be overly extreme, quite honestly,” he added.

So which is it ,KKKramer? Is not accepting the results of an election overly extreme and worthy of concern, or are you going to blow it off as yet another example of his hyperbole? It isn’t as though we don’t have evidence of him carrying out his extreme manners.

Which side are you on? Whose side will you stand on when it comes time?

She is a Trump. While she may dislike Donald, I wouldn’t trust her anymore than any other Trump. She got screwed, so she says, it doesnt make her trust worthy.

But Mary Trump, a vocal critic of the president said that the comments should be taken as a clear warning.

Michael Cohen said the exact same thing last night on CNN.

Those who know him best…know him best.

Having read about Trump’s life before he ran for President his actions do not surprise me.
The people who back him shock me.
He has put in place a large group of crazies like Barr, Pompeo who will do anything to remain in power.
I don’t believe he is bluffing.

Party of crooks. That’s all the GOP is.

I said on here months ago I think Biden will pardon Trump to ensure a peaceful transition. I know that doesn’t cover state charges but I wouldn’t be shocked to see a deal made on those as well.

I disagree. The judgement is unfair. As a person who is generationally removed from the source of the family disfunction, she has a unique perspective. As a clinical psychologist and a member of the family, she has a unique perspective.

If he were able to get pardons for state-level crimes, I would tend to agree with you. However, even if Q-Tip were to pardon him for federal crimes, the State of NY and others are going after him. His only hope is to continue trying to play the “nobody can touch me as long as I am in office” card for as long as he can.

And he’ll cheat every way that he can in order to do so.

I hope that the House has hearings where Senator Scott can go on at great length about the dangers of counting votes in the American Republic.

I think that Republican loyalty stops short of having the Republican governors commit political suicide on his behalf.

But yeah, otherwise, it’s just astonishing how all those Republican politicians without Trump’s excuse of mental illness are willing to junk the American experiment for him.

Indeed, late-arriving absentee military ballots in Florida were a major point of contention during the contested presidential election of 2000, with Republicans at the time supporting the idea that late ballots be counted.

Clear counterpoint to Scott’s bill, “Why does the GOP want to disenfranchise absentee military ballots?”

It doesn’t matter whether he’s bluffing. What matters is what he can do. He has no mechanism by which to just stay. Maybe SCOTUS can swing the election for him if it’s very close in one state, but even that scenario looks increasingly doubtful. But mostly I just don’t think he’s going to have the Republican Senate behind him after they lose the chamber, their cushy jobs because of him. I don’t believe that a lot of these yes men standing behind him nodding in agreement right now will continue to do so once treason is on the table. There’s literally no crime in going along to get along right now. That changes dramatically after the election when he wants them to start taking action.

Believe the Dictator when he speaks. He is telling you EXACTLY what he is going to do.

In this case, he will;

  1. Continue to rail against Mail in Ballots to undermine confidence in the Election
  2. Declare Victory EARLY on election night before mail-in ballots have been counted
  3. Order the DOJ and all Republican AGs to seize all outstanding ballots and destroy them
  4. File lawsuits in every state to force Republican legislatures to directly elect “EC Electors” for HIM ONLY and invalidate all previously counted ballots.
  5. DEMAND that the Supreme Court rule (6-3) on invalidating the remaining ballots (since they have been destroyed) and declaring him the victor.
  6. When the shit really hits the fan, invoke the INSURRECTION ACT and order the US Military into the streets to arrest anyone demonstrating.
  7. Invoke MARTIAL LAW and imprison his political opponents and Journalists who do not bow down to him.

Don’t think it can’t happen here. EVERYTHING I have listed is LEGAL and within the powers of the Presidency and his Butt-Monkeys in the DOJ and DHS.
We all know the INTENT is malicious, but the ACTIONS are not illegal. All he needs is the 6-3 SCOTUS to back him up, along with the supine and feckless Republican Senate and our Democracy is TOAST.
