Marco Rubio Doesn’t See ‘Any Evidence’ That Restaurants Are Driving Florida’s COVID Surge | Talking Points Memo

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) claimed Monday that there was no evidence that restaurants had contributed to Florida’s alarming surge in COVID-19 cases — despite CDC guidance that indoor dining poses a substantial risk of virus transmission.

“I don’t think there’s any evidence that the businesses we’re talking about closing are in any way driving the infection surge,” Rubio said.

“It’s the people who are going to these businesses who are to blame,” he thoughtfully explained.

What is in the water that Marco “Dry Mouth” Rubio is drinking? Hallucinogens?? People who gather in restaurants, no virus contracted? People who gather outside restaurants, virus is contracted? What a dweeb! Medical degree from Trump University?

There is no evidence that Republican conventions promote contagion either, so have a big one and ban masks too.

And an analysis last month from JPMorgan, based on debit and credit card data, found that restaurant spending was the strongest predictor of a subsequent rise in new COVID-19 cases out of all categories of card spending.

In-person restaurant spending, analyst Jesse Edgerton said, was “particularly predictive.”

Any epidemiologist, economist, or statistician will tell you to follow the data.

Nothing is driving it! It just happens! Plus it’s a hoax. Plus it’s China’s fault. Plus there will be a vaccine any minute, plus Bill Gates will put a transmitter in you if you get the shot!

Slightly OT but Heather Cox had this insight about DeVos and the “Open the Schools” motivation today:

Then DeVos said something interesting: "Look, American investment in education is a promise to students and their families. If schools aren’t going to reopen and not fulfill that promise, they shouldn’t get the funds, and give it to the families to decide to go to a school that is going to meet that promise,” she said.
This is the best explanation I’ve seen for why the administration is so keen on opening up the schools. DeVos is not an educator or trained in education or school administration. She is a billionaire Republican donor and former chair of the Michigan Republican Party. She is a staunch proponent of privatizing the public school system, replacing our public schools with charter schools, as her wealthy family managed to do with great success in Michigan, which has been flooded with low-performing charter schools, which have very little oversight.
It seems she is hoping to use the coronavirus pandemic to privatize education across the nation.

there was no evidence that restaurants had contributed to Florida’s dramatic spike.

actually, there are several studies that show this. One widely reported analysis months ago diagramed how 1 person infected about 6-8 people in a closed restaurant: 4 at her table, 2-3 in the table(s) downwind (HVAC flow) of subject zero, and 1 upwind (due to HVAC vortex-like flow.

“Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) claimed Monday that there was no evidence that restaurants had contributed to Florida’s alarming surge in COVID-19 cases ,”

An aggressive ‘contact tracing’ protocol would provide valid evidence that restaurants did, or did not contribute, and to what extent.

I think Marco may be more ignorant than DiJiT.
