The first episode of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) summer floor vote series meant to highlight Republican obstruction and frustrate the Democratic holdouts on the filibuster went off with a whimper Tuesday night.
“As an original cosponsor of this bill I am disappointed that the Senate was unable to pass this much needed legislation, but I will continue the fight for equal pay across the United States,” he told reporters.
Manchin is going to disappoint us right into minority status. Then he won’t have to worry about the filibuster because McConnell will eliminate it for his own ends.
Republicans will never relent and this is all that matters now: bring it all on before summer ends. Apparently VP Harris has the right to overrule the parliamentarian in future but who knows if Manchin will go along so bundle the AJP and AFP together and pass the package. America will thank you and the ads for 2022 will (almost) write themselves.
Josh was on ari Melber yesterday, said it’s possible, not certain, that when push comes to shove Manchin will change his behavior and support Biden. I’m paraphrasing. Let’s hope he’s right. After all, WV stands to gain by Biden agenda.
Shumer is supposedly going to introduce various measures that will make the filibuster more painful for the filibustering party. However, given that Joe “Crow” Manchin is against any changes to the filibuster, they most likely won’t pass.
I would be interested in knowing where the mythical line between push and shove actually lies. Seems like we passed it with the January 6th commission but I guess Insurrection is still in push territory?
I guess we get to find out if Joe Manchin loves the filibuster in its present form so much that he continues to be disappointed his entire life as all legislation he might prefer goes down the same way.
People need to be reminded that there is no 60 vote requirement to pass any of this legislation. The filibuster is a rule that requires the agreement of 60 senators to have a vote on the underlying legislation. Without the filibuster Schumer would have waited until Gillibrand was available to vote and it would have been passed by Harris’s tie breaker. Manchin has nobody but himself to blame for his refusal to change the rules to something more democratic. You can bet the Republicans would ditch the filibuster if they needed to and had a majority in the senate. They already have.
Interested to hear what the GOP arguments were in favor of a gender pay gap. Or are we so deep into a post-policy age that no one feels a need to address legislation on its merits?
