Manchin Doesn’t Support DC Statehood Bill | Talking Points Memo

“If Congress wants to make DC a state, it should propose a constitutional amendment,”

Uh, Manchin, name a state that was added by constitutional amendment. Just one.

Take away the asshole’s parking spot at washington national airport.

Uh, Manchin, by that logic maybe we should eliminate those states that weren’t created via the constitution. All 37 of them, including yours.

Just saying, as a DC Dad with a DC family, this is really disappointing and hurtful.
I get him saying he thinks there is a better way to do this, but that is not the way that is in front of us and I would have thought the prospect of ensuring ~700,000 Americans enjoy their full rights and privileges as US citizens would have motivated him to at least prioritize righting that wrong and at least try to help.

Could you Imagine what LBJ would have done to this spineless prick
He would have been shitting out a new asshole by now
Time to lay it out to him
If you insist on supporting Republicans’ you might as well be one
We can make that happen by cutting your support and pimaring your ass

He’s not saying that there’s a better way, he’s saying “no”. Going the constitutional amendment route will kill DC statehood, and he needs to be forcefully and repeated asked to state why after 37 consecutive states over 2 centuries being added via congressional legislation, why this time it has to be via constitutional amendment?

Manchin, where have I heard that name before?

we are saying the same thing.

He’s 74 years old and does not have to run again until 2024. He’s likely to decline that option.

I know the day will come when “fuck this guy” isn’t my response to the latest thing he does. But that day isn’t here yet.

I’m actually ok with this for now as long as he eventually comes out in favor of the voting rights bills. Those are absolutely crucial for the next election and passing those would almost guarantee Democrats pick up a couple of seats in the Senate. That could then lead to Democrats passing DC statehood in 2023. I’m sure having to wait a couple more years is little comfort for folks in The District, and I hate that for them.

Do you think he’s likely to? He just seems to be mostly torpedoing stuff.

Actually, a national referendum on who gets to be a state would be kind of fun. Let all the losers be relegated to territorial status until they convince a majority that they’re worthy of statehood.

He probably an under cover agent of some sort.

It would certainly cut out a lot of the congressional chaff

I knew he would be bad and he hasn’t disappointed me yet.

At this point it would be easier if Joe Manchin just listed the parts of his party’s platform he actually supports.

Meanwhile…

Virginia “brought suit against West Virginia asking the court to declare the counties part of Virginia, which would have made West Virginia’s admission as a state unconstitutional. Meanwhile, on March 10, 1866, Congress passed a joint resolution recognizing the transfer. The Supreme Court decided in West Virginia’s favor in 1870.”

Well, Joe, let’s look at Texas. Declared independence from Mexico in 1836 and applied for admission to the Union in 1836. Denied by the Secretary of State–slavery being prevalent in the territory. Reapplied for admission in 1844, the bill to annex Texas passed the House but was defeated in the Senate. After the election of 1844, with the help of pro-slavery members of the Senate and House, an annexation bill was passed by both houses. President Tyler signed the bill in 1845. Then, just 14 years later, Texas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy–to preserve slavery. Readmitted to the Union in 1870, after President Grant signed the bill passed by Congress to readmit Texas. Still looking for a constitutional provision to admit Texas. What we do have is Ted Cruz and Louie Gohmert. Thanks Joe.
