Manchin Denies ‘Being Naive’ On Bipartisanship After Tanking Odds Of Voting Bill Passage | Talking Points Memo

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Sunday denied having any delusions of bipartisan compromise in a 50-50 Senate after declaring his opposition to the House-passed For the People Act in an op-ed published in the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

Joe, Joe, Joe, while you wait for Republicans to discover their spines there are many more outside of DC that have to languish while you play silly reindeer games. You talk about this mythical seven Republicans that want to work with you, who are they, and why do they not fight back against the extremists in their party.

It would be so less frustrating if he was honest about his reasons for blocking legislation.

This “protecting the filibuster” sounds like an excuse to protect his own conservative, Republican beliefs. He is basically saying that he would allow widespread voter disenfranchisement, blatant racial discrimination in new voting laws and give Republicans leeway to overturn elections that they lose, just to protect the filibuster. Yeah, right. He is protecting his own interests and calling it integrity. In what universe is he a Democrat? Even Blue Dogs have a gag limit.

Meanwhile that filibuster is going to be gone the second it blocks McConnell from passing something.

If you’re not naive, Sen. Manchin, you’re complicit.

I have the Cassandra feeling this spring because it is so obvious where all of this is heading. President Trump tells a big lie that elections are rigged. This authorizes him and others to seek power in extra-democratic ways. The lie is institutionalized by state legislation that suppresses voting, and that gives state legislatures themselves the right to decide how to allocate the electoral vote in presidential elections.

Coming next year, Republican majorities in the House & Senate pass the Protect The Vote bill that prevents the Justice Department in the Biden Administration from investigating naked state attempts to deny the franchise to Democratic-leaning groups.

And the slender Senate majority will gleefully abolish the legislative filibuster to do so.

Joe isn’t naive — he just believes in pink unicorns and fairies at the bottom of the garden.

What a dickhead.

He must be lonely. No wonder he’s cranky.

Yes, the Dem party should squeeze him and Sinema with all available means.

Talk about over exposure, jeez. I am sick of hearing from Manchin. If he wasn’t such a publicity hound he might have been able to save some respect. Now no matter how he votes he leaves everyone with a sour taste.

He is waiting for a Republican to take his heat?

This man is such a bald face liar it makes me so angry. I have to say that I never hated Trump. I mean, if you pick up a poisonous snake and it bites you, well it’s a snake and you should have known better to let it anywhere near you. But Manchin, well he’s supposed to be a friend and an ally and I feel that it’s worse when someone like that betrays you and lies to you. I never hated Trump, but I sure as hell hate Manchin.

And state legislatures will ensure that anyone who objects can be run down.

He’s fooling no one –
“Manchin’s op-ed might as well be titled, ‘Why I’ll vote to preserve Jim Crow,’” tweeted Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.).

“We didn’t need an op-ed to know you’re unwilling to protect our democracy,” Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) added.

Joe Manchin should just shut his trap! Every time he tries to justify his stance, he looks and sounds dumb, sounding stupid and uneducated!

Incredible. Manchin is so stupid, so out-to-lunch, so f**king DUMB, that even Chris Wallace on Fox News, of all places, has trouble pointing out to him how counter-productive his “stance” is, and how it just plays into the hands of the Republican obstructionists who are using him for their own completely partisan, and totally NOT “bipartisan” purposes.
Chris Wallace. On FOX.
Democrats just can’t catch a break. If only we’d just defeated Susan Collins, it’s incredible how different things would be right now.
