But the significant effort to curb AI-generated deepfakes will almost undoubtedly face extensive challenges in court from social media companies and First Amendment rights groups.
It’s understandable why the social media companies would fight this, but I don’t see the relevance of 1a rights here. Private companies are not required to allow free speech on their platforms.
At any rate, I doubt this fairly limited approach will succeed in the long run. Unless the entire AI industry agrees to a watermarking standard that allows deep fakes to be identified, and that ain’t likely, the AI is getting so good that social media companies won’t be able to detect and flag deep fakes. Millions will slip through the net and people will believe it, because people are still programmed to believe that every still photo or video captures a real event.
It’s becoming so easy to fake something now that generative AI imaging is built into the latest cell phones (see below). Any idiot can now not only email a bomb threat, but show a completely realistic “photo” of the bomb planted at the school. Politicians as usual are too far behind the curve to do anything about it. We’re screwed.
An explosion from the side of an old brick building. A crashed bicycle in a city intersection. A cockroach in a box of takeout. It took less than 10 seconds to create each of these images with the Reimagine tool in the Pixel 9’s Magic Editor. They are crisp. They are in full color. They are high-fidelity. There is no suspicious background blur, no tell-tale sixth finger. These photographs are extraordinarily convincing, and they are all extremely fucking fake.
Probably little to no authority. I’m not up to speed on Georgia administrative law, but my 30,000 foot view is that the courts are likely to say this nonsense is outside their authoritah. And that’s not even accounting for DOJ seeking injunctive relief for deprivation of urban voting rights, which is a thing I would like to see filed for first thing Monday morning. There is no difference between depriving the right to cast a ballot and preventing it from being counted.
We have to keep reminding ourselves that yes this isn’t our father’s/grandfather’s Republican party anymore, and it’s not even W’s or Shrub’s party anymore. It’s Trump’s Party. It still baffles me that good old Republicans of the W and Shrub’s ilk haven’t gotten the backbone or the gumption to counter what DonOLD wants to do.
Just a comment on terminology. “Undocumented immigrants” make them sound like they left their wallet in their hotel room. “Illegal aliens” more correctly describes their status as law breakers. Unfortunately, the easily offended seem to always look for milder descriptions of those they wish to defend, hoping that the uninformed (stupid) will assume some responsibility for the situation. The truth is that illegal aliens, no matter how noble their desire to be here, are law breakers, which doesn’t seem to me to balance out trying to create less valid descriptions of their status.
With the abortion issues in the states he hasn’t figured out that some states have gone full whirlwind, and yet he thinks he can control the states.
He’s also shifting blame. He’s very good at that.
BIL is a “flat-taxer” for example, and being RC, the anti abortion bit comes naturally. When we get together, he’s always regaling us with his “fascinating” ideas of how to make the country work better which almost always entail simple fixes for complicated problems. He was a Trumper long before there was Trumpism.
One of the MO SC Judges, who it appears was working for the forces of evil, is named Ginger Gooch. For the life of me, the story’s font I was reading looked like Ginger Cooch. I spit up some coffee.
Offer donnie a very nicely organized tool chest with each drawer labled and the whole painted faux gold and the tell him to go fix that which he said he could fix all by his lonesome.
