Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) said on Tuesday that out of the House’s two articles of impeachment, he would not vote for the article that charges President Donald Trump with obstructing Congress.
Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) said … he would not vote for the article that charges President Donald Trump with obstructing Congress … because he felt the charge was not sufficiently proven.
This begs the questions:
• WTF does it take?
• How much more evidence does he need?
• Are the Orange Ones’ serial crimes of obstruction not overt enough to be recognized by the Golden Boy?
• Does this schmuck own a TV?
I’m from Maine. I didn’t know I was absolutely fucked in the head. Thanks for letting me know. There are a lot of compassionate and intelligent TPM readers that post here that are from Maine. Maybe choose a smaller brush to paint your hyperbole with next time.
Now, to the point about Jared… he ran a very liberal campaign here and I’m thrilled he ousted Polliquin. It’s a tiny win, but a win nonetheless. He is far from a Susan Collins. That said, I really have no idea why he chose this battle. Next time I’m in Lewiston, I’ll stop by his office and ask.
The argument against the obstruction count is that the Democrats didn’t do everything they possibly could before giving up on getting anything from the Trump administration. Which is true…but it ignores the fact that they would have had to wait months, at least, until the courts processed through the cases (even going fast it would take that long), and that would have run impeachment into the election season or even past it. The absolute denial of any information is definitely new, and you would think makes obstruction an easy call, but weighed against that is that they waited for the courts during Nixon’s impeachment for all of the cases to produce the evidence. There’s no guarantee that the Trump administration would have followed the court decisions, of that Democrats would have won with this SC, so it’s a bit of a mess.
That’s the facts on it…I think it’s pretty clear that total obstruction violates the Constitution and is definitely an impeachable offense (and lots of legal people agree with that). But there is definitely room on this count to say that the Democrats could have waited. Maybe he thinks they should have, in order to get all the evidence, or maybe he thinks that politically he needs to give something to the conservatives in the state to show he’s being thoughtful…either way I don’t really see this as a betrayal, he’s either thinking it through or he’s trying to keep the seat for the Democrats. There probably aren’t enough Democrats not voting for this to make it matter.
Blame the victim? If I rob a bank, it’s not a defense that the bank failed to seek and obtain a restraining order against me while I was robbing the bank.
Golden is voting for what he thinks is the more serious charge. Though he’s the only one who can further explain why he’s taking a pass on the second, unless there’s is a lot of patience in letting the courts decide, the important thing is that Trump will be looking at least one charge.
