Mail-In Elections Can’t Be Built Overnight. Here’s What Will Happen If Every State Tries. | Talking Points Memo

He is one of those rugged individuals who does it all on his own. I asked if he thought the economy could absorb those 600,000 if they shut it down? He said that the federal government can’t run a business and it should be privatized. So, I posted a link to the Constitution about postal delivery. He must have lost his internet connection, because he quit responding.

Perfect - thanks! To be honest, I’m not following much media, given that most of it is unending fellating of Trump.

There’s no reason IMO to ‘keep up’ with the repetitive Breaking News these days. All I care about are updates on a vaccine. We finally got to a group hug on our nominee, so I’ll wait till September to itch my curiosity as the battle heats up. Trump is just too dysfunctional and his gang just too stoopid to bother with. Little things like reading where Don Jr’s medusa girlfriend is getting a $180,000 annually for basically doing the old in and out with Jr. That’s not her title but everyone seems to be stealing from us day and night. The grifting going on is in the open followed by a FU. I admit there’s very few places to hide but I’ll only stick my head up when good news starts to spread. Or, you know, Donnie has the ‘big one’, preferably during one of his afternoon rambles. I’ll have to work on my happy dance.

It looks cavalier, but there is wisdom in your words, with respect to the articles whose actual purpose is to get the reader to say “I hate Trump/I love Trump”, depending on whether or not one is on Nate’s 538 top line or bottom line.

Trump is a cash-cow.

He is the Howard Cosell** of politics and people make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ every time his name comes up.

My concern with Trump, however, is one which is not reported on very much…and that is the extent to which his very presence in the Oval Office is killing people in ways which are wrecking our social structures and actual necessary interconnections.

  • clerks
  • factory workers
  • health professionals and health systems
  • United States Post Office
  • delivery structures adjacent to the above elements

and more

Right now, Moscow McConnell, by maintaining Trump in Office, is damaging this country in multiple ways.

** Years ago, Howard Cosell was voted the most popular TV personality
and the most unpopular.

Thank you for your personal, wholly non-responsive attack on me. If you would like compare civil rights work, I’d be happy to do that. But I’d be much more interested in a substantive response.

I live in a vote by mail state, Oregon, that’s been doing it for more than 2 decades. It’s working smoothly and generates some of the best election participation rates in the country (we can always do better though). Originally proposed by a Republican secretary of state, Norma Paulus. Other states have successful vote by mail, even California. If the most populous state can do it, why not others? Multiple successful examples currently exist, so just use their time tested best practices, sign the appropriate contracts and advance democracy.

Sorta like multiple successful examples of universal health care exist worldwide, with better health outcomes for less cost than the for profit American system.

My red state, Missouri, has already sent me an absentee ballot request for the postponed April (now June) election, August statewide primary and November general election because I am older than 60. All you have to do is check off one of four (mostly health reasons) and they will send you a ballot at the appropriate time.

There is no reason every registered voter couldn’t be sent the same request for an absentee ballot letter due to the pandemic. The GOP governor has already closed school till August which admits that the situation is still dangerous.

I don’t know what you would consider a substantive response but your statement that I responded to didn’t seem to recognize that there ARE states in this country where people of color have not been given a fair chance to vote and voting places are deliberately made very inconvenient or nearly impossible to reach or there is considerable voter intimidation.

But Trump’s main appeal is to white voters, especially rural and if Democrats don’t get out and vote he will win again as long as the wretched Electoral College is in place. The Democrats are certainly working to get rid of that but it won’t happen by this election.

People do like to be personally contacted about their vote but that is not going to be very possible with the Corona Virus still spreading. It may fade some in warmer weather but nobody knows if that is true. And it is almost certainly going to be back this fall. Telephone calls just irritate a lot of people. One hopes that as the OrangeHorror’s behavior continues to get crazier and more dictatorial more of his fans will turn against him. God know what they see in him in the first place other than a low-rent entertainer.

Maybe Mr. Bloomberg is just biding his time.

Washington State already votes in every election by mail. I think Oregon does, too. There are many officials in each state who can assist other states. I love the system. It isn’t set up for every ballot to go through the Post Office. There are official ballot boxes in many places where a voter can drop his/her ballot off. I don’t understand why TPM seems to be oblivious to mail-in elections that already occur in the country.
