He is. My recollection - depending on the poll - by only a couple points in Michigan and Wisconsin. A bit more in Pennsylvania. So, we’re going to need every vote that is getable. Growing up in Chicago, the idea that you couldn’t get out your vote and win a state where you controlled all three key statewide positions was just beyond understanding. We had voting on one day - quaintly called, Election Day - and you went to the polling station to vote. So, it’s hard for me to get my head around the moaning about voter suppression when there are liberal rules and multiple days for voting in elections now.
I agree with you, but I wouldn’t discount a big problem for Trump in trying to deep six the post office. I think the reality is that while urban areas could probably do workarounds for post office delivery, the rural areas are still totally dependent on the post office— for both mail and package delivery, and also for good paying jobs that have benefits.
These are the areas where Trump votes come from; he doesn’t win anywhere without them. It’s hard to think that these rural voters would stand for the draconian cuts that will be necessary to scale back the post office to Trump-induced income and expenses. My gut political sense is that Trump and his Republican allies will get the hint when the post office board announces how they will cut service and jobs to meet current income and expenses. And that those cuts will come - oh, let me speculate - on October 1st, a month and change before the election.
Even the ever-challenged Democrats should be able to figure this one out. If ever there was an issue for them to play hardball, this is it.
I live in Washington state and work for the USPS. Please stop calling it “absentee voting.” We call it Vote by Mail. Thanks!
538 right now: 52.1% Disapprove / 44.0% Approve
8.1% D/A spread. It inches up nearly every day and has been averaging around 1% a week. I bet it passes 10% by month’s end, if not sooner, around 53.6% D / 43.2% A.
If everyone gets to vote by mail in November, he’s unrecognizably burnt toast.
Thank you! This is the kind of journalism that makes me glad for every penny I’ve spent supporting TPM.
Private mail service which will cost a lot more for us peons. Like everything else the Republicans want to put in place.
Pretty much illustrates how well thought out his answers are. Email, etc., is free only if you buy a computer, subscribe to a web service with monthly payments not to mention upkeep on the computer. His ignorance and lack of understanding of our most basic practices is just breath-taking. I realize that he is well into some sort of dementia in addition to his greed and general lack of mental sharpness. The only thing he was good at was cheating. He is a master at that!!
I’m guessing that you are not black or Latino and don’t live in a state that makes voting for those individuals extremely difficult. I had high hopes for a black governor in Georgia but overlooked the sleaze a white candidate can pull off. I still think Abrams won that governor’s race but the white sleaze made sure all black votes were not counted. Now he is governor and I’m glad I don’t live there any more.
This Oregonian agrees
Killing the USPS would be a real problem for the other delivery companies (FedEx and UPS) because they use USPS as part of their delivery chain. They would have to increase prices. Plus, some of the most right-wing-get-rid-of-all-them-government-leeches types actually work for or retired from the USPS, strangely, and could suffer financial setbacks.
I thought one of the bills in the House was to provide funds for this. I’m not sure what happened to it, if anything…
Neither one of them has done jack-squat since ending their campaigns. I think it was all just a mirage that they were going to spend a dime that wasn’t intended to get them elected.
What truly ticks me off is that Bloomberg used to be the mayor of NYC. I haven’t seen ANYTHING that indicates he’s contributed anything to the cause of saving his previous constituency and that’s just incredibly wrong.
I’m hoping against hope that someone will tell me I’m wrong about this, but were it true, it would’ve been emblazoned all over the media.
I’m not entirely certain about Michigan, but PA and Wisconsin have GOP dominated legislatures, so that could still be problematic.
I don’t know what media you follow; nor do I know what all has been reported – so I won’t comment on that part – but as to what Bloomberg has done, yes, you’re completely incorrect.
His organization, Bloomberg Philanthropies, is funding good work on the virus – around the world. There are two key programs: a “Coronavirus Local Response Initiative” and a “Coronavirus Global Response Initiative.” I support both.
And over the last ten days alone, Bloomberg himself has held relevant events with Barack Obama and with Bill Gates.
As per usual they want to privatize it so one more befuddled white man can make a fortune on the backs of someone else and our country will look even MORE third world without a functioning mail service…or one we can’t afford.
Perfect - thanks! To be honest, I’m not following much media, given that most of it is unending fellating of Trump. This and PW is about all I’m willing to read anymore and neither were covering this.
It’s my bad. My blood pressure just won’t tolerate it and I’m a happier girl for it.
For what it’s worth, I don’t see it that way at all.
You were aware enough to know that you just might have been unaware – which is something many people don’t know enough to admit about themselves.
At the same time, I also know that there are people on this site with stronger stomachs than mine that know more than I do because they’re willing for even a moment to wander into the sites in which I don’t dare to tread…
