I have the halfass dream, where, in the next few days, Romney and Murkowsky declare themselves to be independents (Murkowsky already is?) and will caucus with the Democrats.
Pandering to Trump while trying to run a semi-coherent political campaign, even if you are just a right wing shill, must really keep you on your toes these days.

My understanding, from what I read, is debate before voting by both houses of Congress is limited to two hours. Most political commentators say a final declaration of Biden’s victory would come before midnight on the 6th, regardless whatever shenanigans the GOP tried to engage in.
But they’re so goddamn stupid they think Trump is going to give them his blessing? They’ll have to pry his base from his fat, tiny hands - after he’s wrung every dime out of them.
Who could’ve predicted America would have such a glut of Latter-day Quixotes addicted to that heady mix of butt-sniffing and spray tan. Praise the Lard!
That might depend on the eternal question for republicans of their stripe: What’s in it for me? Once Trump is gone do they really have anyone to whom they need to pander?
It will be interesting to see what paths these “weathervane” politicians try to follow.
I think the idea is to somehow get the alternate (illegitimate) EC delegations for AZ, PA, WI, etc. recognised (too late), or for Pence to declare certain states for Trump. He can’t. Unconstitutional. That would be like the celebrities announcing the Oscars to decide to give it to someone the Academy didn’t vote for.
Ultimately on Jan 20th, Trump’s constitutional warrant expires and Nancy Pelosi becomes president; providing we’re not in a hot civil war by then.
But basically this is just all performative - a shitshow of shitshows.
I don’t doubt they think, or know, that eventually Trump’s hold on his base will wane and loosen. So, they will want to conduct themselves in a manner wherein they shift that loyalty to their column. In the end it amounts to pandering to Trump, but for somewhat self serving and ulterior motives.
I can imagine some unspeakable shenanigans involving people dressed up in confederate uniforms, cannons, the 1812 overture and live shells at the joint session.
Given that there are Republicans in both chambers of Congress who intend to object to the electoral college votes in at least one state, members will be forced to vote on their objections.
Just a minor nit: I have not yet heard any Senator say they will sign a formal objection to any state’s electoral votes. I am wondering if Mitch will allow Hawley et al. to “object” to the votes by standing up during the joint session and giving a stupid spiel at the lectern, but not allow them to actually sign a formal objection which then would require embarrassing votes by the other GOP senators. I do not think the MAGA base is smart enough to tell the difference, for the most part.
Objecting isn’t the same as voting, and it would take a majority vote in both the House and Senate to overturn the EC and declare Trump the winner. Ain’t gonna happen.
It’s a dog and pony show for the benefit of Trump’s MAGAt base, by those R’s desperate enough that they feel they need it. That’s all it is. And Loeffler really needs it for the runoff. I’m liking the smell of desperation here.
“When the two Houses separate to decide upon an objection that may have been made to the counting of any electoral vote or votes from any State, or other question arising in the matter, each Senator and Representative may speak to such objection or question five minutes, and not more than once; but after such debate shall have lasted two hours it shall be the duty of the presiding officer of each House to put the main question without further debate.” 3 US Code §17
God, I’m depressed at the sheer execrable stupidity. Going for a walk!
I question how much of this is just a show of support in hopes of holding the Senate that will fizzle out when it’s time to put up or shut up. Once Trump holds his rally and the votes have been cast in GA, there’s really no need to go through with this. But I really don’t know how much this helps them in a state where quite a few voters chose Joe and an R senator. Why would you come back out to vote for the R senator promising to strip your vote away for Joe?
Jon Ossoff hit one so far out of the park live on Fox News, it’s still going:
As Josh says, we can’t control what they do, only our response to it. Let them knock themselves out; really … knock themselves out!
I hope she and the other R lose even worse than Trump did in the national vote
Illegal votes! Must challenge every single one of those.
