I wouldn’t characterize the US as a banana republic, i.e. a country at the mercy of United Fruit, so much as a country with an archaic constitution. This is highlighted by such vestigial features as the US Senate, which is wildly disproportionate and unfair in its representation, and persists precisely because that imbalance benefits vested minority interests. Or the electoral college, what’s that? No newly formed countries even bother with the US constitution as a model, because it is a recipe for disaster. We abolished slavery with a constitutional amendment, but the 2nd amendment, which was designed to make rounding up of runaway slaves and controlling large groups of slaves feasible, remains on the books. A great blessing of the Senate impeachment trial is that it highlights just how vestigial the institution has become. Switzerland, which modeled its constitution on the US constitution circa 1846, subsequently overhauled its upper-house senate in the 1990s to make it representative. Imagine, representative democracy. You don’t hear anybody saying Swiss democracy is broken.

Assuming that he is removed and/or voted out, I expect that the new POTUS will take a page from Lincoln’s second inaugural address. The upshot will be that after all of the trauma, we don’t need to bring more on our recovering country.

All the Republicans – from McConnell on down to that pusillanimous little shitweasel Susan Collins – essentially see their roles as being Reichstag deputies under their beloved Führer.

Before you could avoid the Trump litigation machine by not doing business with him. Now, he can target you even if you want nothing to do with him. What him and Barr have done to the DoJ should have its own Article of Impeachment.

This is a country not only in decline, but staggering towards failure: the active shitter in the White House has merely exposed the craven hollowness of these federal agencies and institutions we were all told were full of wonderful, bipartisan men and women who are doing the quiet work of “defending the Republic,” only to see what a sick farce that’s turned out to be. Couple that with the maddening learned helplessness of the public (“Oh, whatever shall we do? Why hasn’t Mueller/Pelosi/Whoever saved us yet?”), a compromised judiciary, out of control and openly bigoted law enforcement personnel and a military having its war criminals feted, well, “banana republic” almost looks like a compliment.

What’s the point of being president if you can’t abuse your office to empower and enrich yourself and destroy your enemies? You don’t actually think it’s about doing the will of the people and all that do-gooder crap, do you? Screw that utopian shit.
