Leahy Won’t Run For Ninth Term | Talking Points Memo

If it isn’t, then Dems have a much larger problem beyond Vermont.

Sadly, that wouldn’t be unexpected.

The local reporting says that when you have a small state long tenure means no one gets to move up the ladder. Leahy can work on his acting career…

Diane Feinstein are you listening?

Nah, and neither are Pelosi, Clyburn and Hoyer, the House Octogenarian Leadership.

And good riddance to Leahy, who helped the mob push Franken out of the Senate.

@ernesto1581 seems to be a Vermonter so I, as an infrequent resident would defer, but when we lived in Southern VT for a few years I was surprised at all the Trump signs - oh and our neighbor with a Confederate flag!

My sense is that VT is safely blue because it’s such a small state (<700k people) in which the bulk of the population lives in bright blue Burlington, but the spread of disinformation and the disintegration of the Democratic brand, for lack of a better word, means not to take it for granted. That said, personally, we love Welch and would be happy to see him in the senate, white hair and all.

Please examine the parenthetical clause which I cited.

so early contenders are …

U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt.

State Senator Becca Balint, D-Windham

State Sen. Kesha Ram, D-Chittenden,

Lt. Gov. Molly Gray

OH … and … potentially?? on the GOP side ?? - the reportedly popular in the eyes of all (?)…

Republican Gov. Phil Scott

But … ???

… just a guess …

  • Scott stays true to his previous indications & chooses not to participate in mandatory swimming in the GQP cesspool

  • Welch steps up and gets widespread Democratic backing

  • The House seat - ? - becomes a battle ?

  • If Scott vacates the Gov seat - Gray becomes Gov?

Vermont has a fairly strong rural-urban divide (all the “take back vermont” signs complaining about civil unions were on the shoddiest old barns you ever saw), but many/most of the towns are blue, as shown by the overwhelming Dem majority in the statehouse. The GOP here used to be the last remnants of the sane wing of the party, but a lot of that is gone now, and the current organizaton is run by trumpers.

The republican governor did well during the first 9 months or so of the pandemic, but has effed up horribly as delta started spreading and the school year started. I wonder if a democrat will replace him next time around.
