A planned lawsuit from the family of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X follows decades of trauma and lingering questions for his daughters. The $100 million wrongful death suit was announced on Tuesday by attorney Ben Crump, who said he was providing “formal notice” to the City and State of New York, the FBI, and the CIA, as well as other federal agencies.
You don’t file lawsuits to solve 60-year-old mysteries. You file lawsuits if you have a good faith basis to believe that the defendants did a particular thing or things in violation of your legal rights.
This is like June Oswald suing the FBI and Dallas Police Department for wrongful death in order to find out who killed her father.
For young people (so types the 40 year old), the name Malcolm X seems substantially lost to history. An interesting, complicated figure. Today, civil rights = MLK, period.
Without comment on the merits here (I’m not qualified), it seems that events could have taken quite a different turn. Something about the plans of mice and men.
To carelessly map the period onto our modern discourse, I can faintly imagine MX saying “defund, actually defund the police” and MLK responding "you reach too far beyond the line and get nothing–say ‘demilitarize’ ".
There is new evidence indicating the involvement of other assassins and an incompetent investigation if not a coverup. It seems appropriate to revisit this with all the resources afforded by a lawsuit.
What I find difficult to appreciate is that the Nation of Islam is not named as a defendent.
Wonderful! But such things do not make this deeply stupid lawsuit in any way proper. It’s going to get dismissed without any discovery ever taking place. It is a misuse of judicial resources, and whichever lawyers are stupid enough to put their names on it should be sanctioned.
Yep…Ukraine said, come invade us and blow up all our housing and infrastructure so we can wage war on you from within our homeland as it gets destroyed and our people are murdered.
Here’s the definition of a 15 minute city. It’s the kind of urban planning that most Americans once had or currently benefit from. Conservatives who claim that “the globalists” are coming for you and everything in your community ought to be supportive of them because communities are strengthened and everything you need is readily available.
As far as their claims about the government taking your land without proper compensation. Eminent domain is legal under the constitution for public goods ie infrastructure, schools etc. The fifth amendment takings clause. However it was watered down under Kelo vs New London. Allowing a municipality to condemn property and allow it to be transferred for economic development. A number of municipalities have refrained from this because of community opposition, an example being New Rochelle in the 80’s wanting to condemn a lower to middle class area and replace it with a big box store. New London eventually never followed through with the development of the pharmaceutical industry. Much of this depends on the definition of blight. One person’s seemingly run down block that should be torn down is another’s canvas for revival as is.
The Manhattan DA at that time was Frank Hogan was a so-called law and order type. He would be no fan of Malcolm and the movement so it’s obvious that he would wink and nod at who the murderers were. Hogan also had an extensive morals squad where he would prosecute folks like comics such as Lenny Bruce. Fun fact: one of the prosecutors was a young Johnny Cochran.
Benjamin Crump files these lawsuits to get publicity and 30-40% of the settlement. Malcolm X was most definitely hounded and harassed by the government. But, in this case, I think the police saw a Nation of Islam hit squad take out a recalcitrant member and said “good riddance”. After which, they completely blew off the murder investigation. And, now all the suspects are dead. The family would be better served raising money for an independent investigation.
Because they only know who 1 of them is, and he says there were 4 others, while the government’s admitted it has evidence… and hasn’t actually released that evidence. Malcolm was shot almost 60 years ago. I suspect the plan is the ‘settle’ for the release to the family of his unredacted FBI file, all of the evidence the NYPD/NYC DA’s office have, and possibly a commitment to re-open the investigation.
Also, an apology for burying it, and maybe a public bitchslapping of the NYPD, which is never a bad thing.
