Congressional Democrats blasted the newly installed United States Postmaster General — a major GOP donor whose appointment was controversial given his lack of prior USPS experience — for implementing operational changes that have slowed postal service in the midst of the pandemic.
2006 law requiring it front 75 years in funding for its pensions…
Imagine if the military was under the same stricture: Despite being a gov’t agency, they would have to divert funds from defense to pay for military retirees even though, at the end of the day, it is all 100% taxpayer funded. This was designed to hurt not help the USPS.
The Post Office is no different than the military which has never shown or been asked to show a profit. Both are publicly funded institutions, Constitutionally mandated that have been around since 1789.
Anyone that pays attention to the Post Office yak knows that it’s current problems were intentionally created by its critics. The USPS is forced by an Act of Congress to prefund a pension plan that makes it impossible for them to get out of the red. The Military is not forced to do this. No other Government funded entity is. The long term goal is to intentionally weaken it then “fix” it by privatizing it but the current changes are being made to hamper it’s ability to deliver ballots in the upcoming election. That’s what this asshole donor was hired on to do. If successful he’ll have jacked with America’s democracy in a way there’s no going back.
trumpites who want to destroy the USPS and stop delivery and return of mail-in/absentee ballots don’t seem to understand that repub voters will also be affected. But it shouldn’t be a surprise that Lovejoy was picked mostly because no experience with anything postal related. trumPP likes his appointees to reflect himself, cunning, malleable and overwhelmingly stupid.
"The U.S. Postal Service has been in a precarious financial situation for some time, in part due to a 2006 law requiring it front 75 years in funding for its pensions. "
The biggest GOP installed albatross for the USPS.Use a 10,000 watt bulb to shine the light.
I had an 18 year career with the USPS as a clerk, a mechanic, and an electric technician retiring in 2002. I also was a local APWU griever, president ans regional Advocate at arbitrations. Since my hiring the Post Office opponents have been trying to sell off profitable sections; first class mail and priority packages. Leaving bulk mail to the USPS. Congress has beat back those attemots. Congress has had a significant hand in the USPS difficulties by taking billions of dollars, when the USPS was flush with money, from their treasury and leaving IOUs which never got redeemed. Also as now the post office is being run by a man who has had nothing to do in his life with the post office but mail a letter. Also they have been trying to save their way to prosperity by Austerity means. Always on the back of the rank and file and blaming them when it doesn’t work. Just another bullshit decision to ruin a great institution. Just as other institutions under this incompetent regime. As the government, the USPS is a SERVICE not a fuckin’ business!.
Life in the antiworld continues, as key agencies are undermined by the most malign, incompetent “leaders” put in the job precisely beCAUSE of their malign incompetence. You keep trying to awaken from this nightmare…
It has been a goal of Republicans to destroy the USPS for a while now, and I honestly can’t understand why. They have to know that FedEx, UPS and others just will not deliver to rural areas at the same cost, or handle the volume of mail, and the excessive cost compared to putting a stamp on an envelope will really hurt people financially. The areas most hurt by this are probably rural areas, who depend on the mail more than other parts of the nation for deliveries…can they really think turning the red areas against them is a good idea?
It’s a stupid police that needs to go away, we need the USPS pension requirements removed and them back in business, fully funded, the way they should be. It’s just one more way that Republicans have tried to damage the nation, and it’s become critically obvious that they just don’t care as long as they get their way.
What’s the plan when DeJoy gives them the middle finger? Another sternly worded letter? The House hearing has already been delayed until mid-September. Maybe he’ll show, maybe he won’t, maybe he’ll ask for a reskej due to “unforseen commitments.” If he does show, maybe he’ll just lie & stonewall, or maybe he’ll agree to investigate the complaints & report back to Congress, say, in early 2021?
I’m just still gobsmacked at how utterly toothless our supposed checks-and-balances are when confronted with shameless criminals.
ETA: Also, a prediction: sometime in the post-election future, we’ll discover that overtime directives & funding cuts were instituted/targeted on a district-by-district basis (i.e., Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Miami, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis).
What, to ensure that any employee at USPS has pension contributions made from the time of their birth?
These are not high-profile, flashy jobs. Folks do it with a sense of purpose and knowing they’ll have a retirement when they’ve worked for 30-40 years. Just another flavor of corporate cronyism.
They should demand this be played on every evening news program
I’m just watching the CBS evening news and they just sugarcoat his appearance
WTF The water …again
This was when blue collar work was respected. There were lots of benefits as I remember, including a generous pension plan (isn’t that why most of work, so we can retire early and get paid until we kick off?)
