It was a stunning accusation: Two days before the 2018 election for Georgia governor, Republican Brian Kemp used his power as secretary of state to open an investigation into what he called a “failed hacking attempt” of voter registration systems involving the Democratic Party.
This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1311570
Yet again another example of the failures within the core GOP party to do anything remotely like lead or govern with integrity and accountability.
They screw up, blame the other party with zero evidence, and are found to have had inadequate security for the Georgia registered voters.
What a shame. The GOP is nothing but bark, smoke and mirrors. There is not center, its hallow, and filled with nothing but fear and anger.

The integrity and accountability part would have been easy if Kemp had just stepped aside as SoS. No election should be controlled by a candidate who is the current SoS. Same thing with Kobach in KS.

The internet activity that Kemp’s staff described as hacking attempts was actually scans by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that the secretary of state’s office had agreed to, according to the GBI. Kemp’s chief information officer signed off on the DHS scans three months beforehand.
And this, right here, is a good illustration of why every even halfway competent cybersecurity training, especially on the topic of testing security, emphasizes that you must get specific and explicit permission in writing before starting your tests.
The number of pen-testers over the years who found this out the hard way could fill a cell block at Pelican Bay.

The Georgia Democratic Party should sue the B*stard. Not for money but for an official statement from the Governor acknowledging that Kemp’s accusations were 100% false. That the problem was a vulnerability and that he
mistook planned security tests and a warning about potential election security holes for malicious hacking.
Kemp then wrongly accused his political opponents just before Election Day

My understanding is, they actually had signed off on DHS conducting “security scans” of their web sites months in advance. So they were at least working to provide some security for GA voters.
But to turn that around and claim that those scans were actually Dems trying to illegally hack into the system? That’s just a stunning level of gaslighting. It was his freaking Dept that signed off and coordinated the scans.

The evidence from the closed investigation indicates that Kemp’s office mistook planned security tests and a warning about potential election security holes for malicious hacking.
They didn’t mistake anything, they knew what it was and purposefully misused it steal an election.
Kemp then wrongly accused his political opponents just before Election Day — a high-profile salvo that drew national media attention in one of the most closely watched races of 2018.
Not a salvo, a lie. I realize I’m quibbling over two words but they’re important.
