Justice Samuel Alito’s decision to leave his luxury Alaska fishing trip unmentioned in his financial disclosures earned him a chorus of sympathy from right-wing attorneys and media figures. Among the most prominent was Fox host Laura Ingraham, who scoffed at the recent ProPublica report on Alito’s rich vacation buddies.
“Even if I knew the story faux ethics claims against Justice Alito involved the King Salmon Lodge (which I didn’t), my own travel there 18+ years ago is irrelevant,” she said. “He had no ethical obligation to report the fishing trip. The real unfairness involves the fact that Alito apparently caught some salmon, yet I came up empty.”
Though, even for well-meaning people, the information overload can make it hard. The Internet has so many things in it and most people don’t have time to get an Information Sciences degree to help them wade through it all to find the diamonds in the rough.
So they have to rely on others to curate the information for them (I know I do), which means that they have to rely on the sources they choose. Unfortunately, far too many have decided to rely on Fox (and friends) for their info dumps, who aren’t even interested in making an effort to provide honest dispatches. You have to be a self-selecting politics nerd to seek out a more fair and balanced take, like TPM.
The issue the “cult” does not get or hear the facts. The MAGA Republicans are not a political party. It’s a cult and maybe this needs to be brought up more.
I’d like to file a point of contention. Ingraham and Fox endeavor to blanket us with a permeating darkness and we need our own Phial of Galadriel to help us break through and illuminate their lies (and omissions).
Hilarious. The entire time Fat Boy was conning the rubes by telling them he was going to “drain the swamp,” the entire motherfucking conservative infrastructure that supported him was living inside a giant cesspool of its own creation. In a sane world every one of these fucks would be in prison, or marched up the steps of the gallows. Now I completely understand the blood lust of the French Revolution.
If it were not for wingnut welfare all around, from SC justices to the FedSoc’s presence in law schools to Fox to Breitbart to Bannon, the right would have no influence. If you’re a law student or young journalist, you have incredibly better funded opportunities if you embrace the dark side than if you try to compete on your talent. Imagine the left’s dominance if we had the vast money tree the right does and they didn’t. That’s why they scream and yell about the left controlling everything. We’re it not for oligarch cash, we would.
