The thing is, I wear a mask to protect others, not to protect myself. It’s harder for (asymptomatic) me to pass it on to you if I am wearing a mask and not spraying virus around in my environment.

If I wear a mask, but others don’t, and they are contagious, they may sneeze on my clothes, my hands, my hair…they may pat me on the back, hand me a glass, whatever and pass on the virus. And if I touch those later and then my face (nose, mouth, etc.), I get the virus.

The anti-maskers think that a mask is self-protection when it is other-protection.

Even if this guy wore a mask at the party he went to, the chance that he picked it up there is still high. Goes home, takes off his sport coat and, boom, touches the spot where a virus-carrying pal patted him on the shoulder saying goodbye, leaving a smear of virus behind.

Wear a damned mask – not for you, for everyone else. Sheesh. It’s inconvenient but it’s not the end of the world.

Since he was about to be seated as a result of a runoff election, I wonder if second place could now be seated?

Good question but, no, an election will be called (by the governor).

I went and looked. He was a responsible person who wore a mask while campaigning. So he tried to avoid it.

ETA: Not that responsible: he opposed letting local elected officials institute mask mandates.

His policy positions were with Trump, straight down the line.

Including, apparently, not believing in the efficacy and/or manliness of masks.

I won’t be wasting any tears on him.

All I know is, by working at Target (which has had at least seven or so reports of infected team members since I started there in September), I should’ve contracted the virus at least once. I wear a mask, every day since I started, and gloves, every day since just before Black Friday, and while I’m not entirely certain I’ve had mild symptoms a couple of times, neither I nor my husband (who wears similar protections along with a lab coat at work) have contracted it yet.

There is something to be said for masking. Is it the be-all and end-all? I don’t know. But it’s worked for me and I’m not changing my strategy. Vaccine will probably be available to me by June (my 65th birthday).

Given that there already is a March special election to fill the LA-02 seat (will be vacated by Cedric Richmond to take a position in the Biden admin), it seems almost certain that will also be the special election for the LA-05 seat.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a statement mourning Letlow’s passing.

“Tonight, the United States House of Representatives sadly mourns the passing of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow,” Pelosi tweeted. “Congressman-elect Letlow was a ninth-generation Louisianian who fought passionately for his point of view and dedicated his life to public service.”

Class and decency. Some people have it, some don’t.

Anything you can cite? I’ve found a couple of articles that I don’t necessarily trust enough to post here, indicating he was one of those “the socialists are comin’ fer yer guns” types that held maskless meet and greets while campaigning.

No more harmful than a few flu-like symptoms, right?

Go look at his Twitter page. Word on the street is wrong.

Other commenters here are pointing in both directions - that he wore a mask during campaigning but was strongly against any mandates.

Tough to know whether to feel sorry for him and his family, based on his words vs. actions.

ETA: Today, according to World-O-Meters, we will cross a significant milestone - only a few States need to report today to cross over 20 million diagnoses:

This wasn’t up when I first googled Letlow mask but would appear to be definitive. It’s from Washington Post:

But photos on his Twitter page show he had an inconsistent record of wearing masks while campaigning, sometimes covering his face at meet-and-greets but also speaking indoors without a mask on to rooms of mask-free residents. At a candidate forum in October, Letlow urged the state to ease pandemic restrictions, saying, “We’re now at a place if we do not open our economy, we’re in real danger.”

No, no, don’t get me wrong — wearing the mask is definitely part of the self-protection strategy, but you certainly also do everything else right: washing your hands, keeping your distance, etc. It’s just that most of the anti-maskers say “well, no big deal, if I get it, I get it” because they see it only as self-protection. The shift to thinking of it as “other protection” is necessary, as even when you get vaccinated, you should still wear a mask. If people stop wearing masks because they view them only as self-protection, we are going to continue to have problems.

Also: since we don’t know how long there is immunity if you do, in fact, get sick and also we know that, although rarely, people do in fact get reinfected (and it’s been worse in some cases than the original infection), having caught it is still not a good reason for not wearing a mask until we know better…

Once we understand all of the transmission issues, it’ll be time to lay the masks aside. Before that we may need to resign ourselves to this being our “new normal” for quite some time.

Also, at our current mortality rate we’re looking to cross 350K (which if I remember right was pretty close to the estimate for the end of the year, back in spring) deaths in the next 36 hours.
