I expect this is a reaction to the agonizing NCSC fight where the Rethugs tried and tried to steal that election from the rightful Dem winner. Their premise for their case was that the voters who were out of the country did not present photo ID and tried to disqualify all of their votes in that race only. Crazy on the face of it, but then, they are Republicans.

Yes I now remember that point you brought up. I think it goes with my point well. When did NC decide that voters had to show a photo ID? And if you’re a NC registered voter, and have been before the requirement to show a photo ID, well how was that discussed at the time of the change?
I seem to remember a story/mention of some NC voters that are either military and stationed abroad, or have lived abroad for many years. It seems that at the time of the change to showing an ID to vote that would have been discussed, and rules written on how to handle it.
But what I really think is that the NC GOP were grasping at straws.
Not sure of the dates, but I believe it was pretty soon after the Rethugs took control of the legislature and when McCrory was Governor. That had always been on their agenda. Anything to deter any person of color from voting. Of course…now that young blacks are moving to the R side this may be abandoned as too discriminatory. Hypocrisy has never bothered the righties.
