Kris Kobach used the mailing list of a privately funded border wall project to goose his own Senate campaign, potentially violating campaign finance law.
Campaign finance laws are a running joke in Washington. What few prosecutions and convictions do occur result in piddling fines and sanctions. Less than piddling actually.
This is tangential, but certainly worth recommending folks read this great past article by Rick Perlstein, which looks at conservatives and their use of mail lists: https://thebaffler.com/salvos/the-long-con
Kobach has the best academic credentials of anyone in politics. So much for 1)the great universities are lefty training grounds and 2) they teach ethics. Looking at you, Harvard, Oxford, and Yale. Or maybe all of that information is fake.
Everything with a Republican represents a potential grift. They stare down into a bowl of Cheerios in the morning and wonder how they can scam General Mills for $100k.
Yes, the campaign laws are a running joke in Washington. BUT, they have a 5 year statute of limitations. So does charity fraud, or an illegal in-kind contribution from a tax exempt group.
I keep waiting for the Democrats to remind the Trumpies that while justice may be preverted now, that a new president can appoint a new AG and new US Attorney’s and then can and WILL prosecute crimes happening NOW to the full extent of the law.
Let’s hope that Kansas has found the remedy for what was wrong with it and see this half-witted crook for what he is. His failing to be elected governor is a great sign, make it it two defeats in a row.
