Klobuchar Urges Nixing ‘Archaic Rule’ Of Filibuster To Codify Abortion Rights | Talking Points Memo

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) on Sunday called for the elimination of the filibuster after the Supreme Court let Texas’ ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy stand, leaving the second largest state in the country with virtually no access to legal abortions.

Really, if Sens. Collins and Murkowski wanted this to happen, they could vote for a carve out in the filibuster and pass the legislation, Sens. Manchin and Sinema be damned.
It isn’t gonna happen.
Go figure.

Thanks TPM - I guess with Monday being a holiday, it was a good idea to get some stories out on a Sunday when this is normally a desert. Seriously, I do appreciate it.

Amy, I hope you’re right and the filibuster sees the historical dustbin, but it will never happen while the Dems are in control of the Congress.

The filibuster is a sad anti-democratic joke of a rule. The majority should be able to pass laws if they have the stomach for it. Sometimes I think they’re all happy to have the filibuster around so none of them have to actually stand for anything.

Collins or Murkowski or any of the retiring GQP Senators who might want to improve on how history views them down the line. Toomey comes to mind.

There are many, many reasons why this should be done. Repubs have tortured and twisted the political and legal system for their own ends. So, I can think of one simple, concise, and compelling reason to proceed that is summed up in two words: Merrick Garland

Absolutely! This must be done sooner than later. Democrats must now execute an offense to save the country and world from the GQP stupidity and ignorance. Amy has my support 1000%!

Truly Manchin and Sinema must know this is that time where the world is looking to them to do the right thing for humanity and not necessarily just their constituents,

The Senate has so many archaic, undemocratic “traditions”, rules, and conventions besides the filibuster and the fact that one (1) Senator can put a hold on confirmations. This is in addition to being an archaic, undemocratic institution from the get-go. Even James Madison deplored it, but in order to form a credible Union, they had to bribe the Slave States to join, and that’s part of what it cost.

I’m for eliminating the Senate in its entirety, and enabling further reforms by decreasing dramatically the number of appointments that require confirmation.

Oh, and back to abortion: Deep-six the “Hyde Amendment”, the one remaining relic of an adulterous, hypocritical old lecher. He’s been dead and unlamentedly gone for decades now.

Pardon the rant.

I think it’s been made abundantly clear by these two kooks that they care nothing for humanity nor their constituents. It would be nice if the latter made that abundantly clear in the next election for their seats, but I don’t hold out much hope. And as far as humanity goes, they couldn’t identify it let alone protect it.

“History”?? (snort) These guys want to get a good seat on the Wingnut Welfare Gravy Train. What’s a kind word in a history text compared with money – BIG money – in hand in the here and now?

Maybe it will take an equivalent law that uniquely affects men to convince legislators that this is a very bad law. As outraged as I am about the dismantling of Roe, since Trump’s SCOTUS picks, it has seemed inevitable. However, the deputizing of citizens of this country to anonymously turn in other Americans FOR A BOUNTY, is beyond imagining. Let’s just change the name of this country to Dystopia. It is far more fitting than anything that connotes a people united by a love of freedom and shared values.

I agree with Amy but I would go further… if the filibuster can be eliminated on a political whim then it’s days are most assuredly numbered. If it is not eliminated now then it will surely be gone the next time the power in the Senate flips… All sincerely wish that that day will never come but reality predicts it will happen. Better to just get on with it and give it a well deserved burial.

When one looks back at the history of the filibuster it is hard to come up with a list of positive outcomes that involved it. And, on the contrary, the list of negative outcomes is quite lengthy.

Oh fil-i-buster… we hardly knew ye.

I blame Jimmy Stewart for keeping it alive and popular.

OT. It’s the reenactment of the “Channel Dash”. They’ve caught the Royal Navy flatfooted again. The First Sea Lord will be pissed!

Could, hypothetically, Collins & Murkowski caucus with Ds to cancel out Sinema & Manchin and overturn the filibuster? Could Harris still break that tie?

I know Collins would never actually make that vote, and I doubt Murkowski would, but I wonder if it’s possible.

Pardon the crudity on a nice quiet Sunday of a three-day weekend, but…

Shit floats.

I think it’s pretty clear that Manchin & McConnell have the exact same constituents and they don’t live in Appalachia.

In the not so long run I would think the filibuster has to go.
If this going too far on abortion is what does it in, it would be a sweet sort of justice.

Canceled my subscription to the Post. Haven’t look back. True, there’s more to the WAPO and the New York Times than their political coverage, but then again, there was more to Jeffrey Dahmer than his culinary tastes.

I think there is a better chance, at least on abortion, folks like Amy can get Sinema on board. And Biden can somehow shake loose Toomey with a treasury or fed appointment so Toomeys fingerprints are directly on it
