I don’t know what prompted me to wet a sponge (sopping wet), but as soon as I did, the bird landed on my finger to drink from the sponge.

That works for trapped wasps, too. Roll up a piece of newspaper, wet the looser end and place it over the wasp (who is probably crawling on a window). The wasp is probably thirsty and will latch on to the paper, and you can take it outside while it refreshes itself.
