Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-MA) has made good on his plan to primary Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) in 2020, a matchup where the age gap is the biggest difference between the two.
I think he’s trying to set himself as the defacto Warren replacement on the bet that she’ll make it to the general election. He can start up his candidacy now, IF she wins the primary, then he’ll be set for the eventual special election for replacement. If she doesn’t, then he can keep challenging Markey…that’s my guess.
“This isn’t a time for waiting, for sitting on the sidelines, or for playing by rules that don’t work anymore. This is the fight of our lives, the fight of my generation”
I don’t know what that is. Can’t even call it a cheap shot cuz Markey clearly isn’t someone who “sits on the sidelines” or “plays by rules that don’t work”. Don’t know who he thinks he’s running against, unless his real aim is the other seat.
One is left with the age thing. He may be right. If he is, perhaps his first legislative effort in the Senate will be to decriminalize age discrimination.
Reasonable people could say this is a good move. Equally reasonable people could say this is a bad move. Most reasonable people are in the middle, have open minds, weigh the merits of ideas rather than acting emotionally. Markey and Kennedy’s politics are, for the most part, indistinguishable. Why divide the reasonable middle when the country is already grotesquely divided??
Or here’s a better prediction: I predict Warren wins Presidency, MA legislature appoints Ed Markey from one senate seat to the other, clears way for Kennedy.
