Kemp Insists There’s Nothing ‘Jim Crow’ About New GA Voting Law | Talking Points Memo

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) suggested on Friday that an overhaul of election rules in his state is not as racist as it seems, declaring there is “nothing ‘Jim’ Crow” about requiring voter identification to submit an absentee ballot.

If GA ran a clean election then why the changes? If more Georgians voted in 2020 than in any other previous election then why make changes?
By making this a law less than 5 months from the last general election then you’re trying to pull the hood over our eyes.

Shorter Georgia: “Whites Only”.

Wait. People waiting in line to vote cannot be brought water? Can these people really defend that?

They’re likening it to vote buying. Which of course is BS. I wonder if in trying to defend this part they’ll parade folks that said “I was standing in line and I didn’t get any water”. And the next questions should be, how long did you stand in line, and did everyone but you get water?
Voting on our new machines during the general we got ink pens because we use paper ballots, is that a bribe?

They’re Not “Jim Crow” laws, they’re Brian Kemp laws.

Sheesh, people, give credit where credit is due. Allow him to claim his shameful place in the history books for the next century.

No, no, no - it’s part of their new pubic health program - if you allow water, next thing you know it’ll be cookies. If cookies, why not Krispy Kreme donuts? Keep that up and soon you’ll have a nation of overweight, dare we say, obese voters!

No, they’ve drawn their line in the sand - Georgians will not be allowed to become even slightly overweight on their watch!

I like this approach.

Can you or someone make it work on Twitter and elsewhere?

Thanks.

I no more trust Brian Kemp to accurately disclose his racist intent than I do the Atlanta shooter. “We asked him and he said he wasn’t racist” doesn’t fly in either case.

All the Jim Crow tools to keep blacks from voting were described in neutral, non-racial language. The new ones are no different and no less racist.

That’s one of the more defensible ones, actually. Strict rules in many places around polling places regarding anything which could be perceived to be bribing/influencing votes. You wouldn’t allow a group to just hand out $20 bills at a polling place, so they’re saying that, since bottled water has a tangible retail value, it’s akin to handing out cash.

They’re certainly abusing the notion, but it’s a logical trail to follow. What should be, if any, limits on what can or can’t be offered at a polling place? Where should the cutoff be?

I wouldn’t mind if I were offered a few.

(I’ll be the one in the chartreuse turtleneck.)

I can if castor doesn’t mind.

In order for a nation to function as a nation, there have to be national voting standards for national elections. Period. End of story. And in the current situation, if that means circumventing the filibuster, that’s survivable. An artificially skewed electorate may not be.

I think it’s also an urban/rural battle. Fulton County/Atlanta against the rest of Georgia.
Lots of progressives in Atlanta of all skin colors.
But yeah, I think the primal fear the GOP exploits is loss of control to the Black folks.

Somebody mentioned what you said, but they pointed out that if everyone is offered a bottle of water, or a cookie- just don’t give a mouse a cookie because then you’ll be there all day.
