Katie Hill Calls Out ‘Double Standard’ Applied To Male Sexual Misconduct In Final Speech | Talking Points Memo

On Thursday, Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) ripped into the “double standard” that forced her to resign over leaked nude photos and an affair with a staffer while her male colleagues accused of sexual misconduct face little to no consequences.

If her argument is "it’s not fair that women can’t get away with bad behavior, too!’ then I seriously have zero sympathy for her and good riddance.

I dunno… I’m still waiting for someone to ask Kirsten Gilibrand her for her opinion…

Lemme guess. White male. Who seems to lack any sense of the entitlement and privilege that come with that.

Noted. I have zero sympathy for slut shaming.

The question is, is the double standard really due to gender or party affiliation.

Which woman was McCarthy screwing around with? Oh, right, Renee Ellmers. You’ll note that she stayed in office afterwards.

“I am leaving now because of a double standard.”

Al Franken called. He’d like a word with you.

I don’t care who anyone sleeps with consensually
but you can’t sleep with a subordinate in this current climate
you just can’t
This double standard seems to be more of a case of IOKIYAR
BTW her hubby is truly a d-bag

Was she pushed out? Because I didn’t see or hear anything about her being pushed out. If she’s so pissed about it why is she resigning? Just stick it out and, let the voters decide in 2020.

She won her election in part because of this wave of “straight white men suck and should be replaced” sentiment. When she gets caught behaving just like those you clamor to replace, you better come up with a better defense than “it’s not fair” and “lemme guess…”

But you keep being you.

I get the double standard complaint, but that seems mostly to be about a lack of shame and a double standard between Ds and Rs as much as about male vs female misconduct. Franken is a pretty obvious example.

There’s also the bong thing and the inappropriate nature of the relationship, which I’m not saying is a serious issue for me or that should be a serious issue, but there are judgement and conduct issues that go beyond weaponizing sexuality in women.

Complicated cases are complicated. You can’t simplify the defense down to just a male/female double standard. It’s totally there, but so are a half dozen other things. Krystal Ball would be a much better example of this (if you ignore the campaign finance issues, which largely were ignored…).

Thanks for filling in another square on my Woke Bingo card.

The fun part is, as part of the divorce proceedings, he probably has to report the income he received for the videos, because most states require full financial disclosures in order to determine the equitable division of the marital estate.

My question to Katie Hill is if you feel this way why did you resign?

I mean if you think it is unfair, resigning instead of fighting it out for many reasons makes the double standard worse. I mean she has CHOSEN to resign so if there is a double standard if Ms. Hill is perpetuating it instead of trying to change it.

She was elected to congress to fight for what is right not quit when the fight got personal.

That’s a fair question about party affiliation.
But this is in part a case of Hill being hoisted up on the Left’s petard. That the dirty-trick Rightwing exposed the behavior doesn’t erase the behavior, and as someone else said above - you cannot sleep with your subordinates in this social/cultural/political climate.

It’s not slut shaming to note that someone caught doing something wrong and paying for it doesn’t get a free pass to engage in whataboutism.

Also, calling her double standard claim into question is not slut shaming. #MeToo has been a huge success and we’ve watched a parade of men leave congress as a result. I fully expect any guy caught doing what she was caught doing in the future doing what she was caught doing is going to have a horrible time in the barrel before he’s sent packing and relegated to lobbying work or podunk local government. Is there still work to do in general? Sure. But at this point, it’s a little bit disingenuous to cling to the double standard victimhood as far as congress is concerned. The days of anyone in congress, regardless of gender, getting away with naughty crap like this are pretty much over because it’s been so successfully weaponized as a means of ruining them completely. It’s just not survivable in any way.

Pretty much; fuck this double standard where men (especially Republican white men) would have gotten away with this and bragged about it. And then there’s the fact that this came to light due to a bitter ex-husband.
