I think that that was a completely valid and honest response. Just because you’re cop, nowadays or ever, doesn’t make you unimpeachable/infallible or whatever label “Blue Lives Matter” people tend to place on cops.

This lawsuit is well covered in a documentary called “Hot Coffee,” which I saw at a documentary film festival. The water was close to boiling temperature, the woman popped off the lid to add cream & sugar (remember those older, flimsy lids?) and the water burned her skin so badly she was hospitalized and needed skin grafts. All she wanted was enough to cover her medical costs, but the jury awarded more.
The story has been mocked and the woman maligned for years, but the store was negligent. At the time of this suit, McDonald’s had over 7000 outstanding complaints of water that had caused burns.

It is usually in the nature of right-wing “just so” stories about welfare queens, black predators, liberal intolerance, flag burning, left-wing professors saying outrageous things, and on and on, that they conform to being anecdotes designed to raise the hackles of the credulous. Upon investigation, they almost always turn out to be wild exaggerations or outright fabrications.
But by then, the damage has already been done. They had a couple of weeks to circulate in the Conservative Media-Entertainment Complex, and have become conventional wisdom.

If I remember correctly, she didn’t even want to go to court. It was McDonald’s refusal to pay her medical costs which landed the incident in court.

Fortunately, the manager was able to review surveillance footage and determine right away that no employee wrote anything on the officer’s cup.

If it was meant to be a joke the officer would have said so after it got the first rise. It was a cowardly thing to do and the Cop made a cowardly attempt to get out of it. But what if he succeeded? That kid would have been fired and probably unemployable for a long time. And he’d be “tagged”. He’d get shit left and right from Cops. Failed to use a turn signal. Did not have his seat belt buckled up. Came to a Hollywood stop"…and so forth. This officer tried to destroy this kids life.

Thanks for that background. I had not read anything about this because frankly, LEOs getting upset when citizens show disrespect is not news worthy. But knowing the whole story does put the Chief in a whole new light. He might even be a bigger fool than the rookie - but he’s the boss. WTF?
