A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Someone’s sending anonymous texts to Kansas voters urging them to vote “yes” on a constitutional amendment on abortion rights on today’s ballot in the state, which the text falsely claims “will give women a choice.”
What a crock of crap. Biden doesn’t deserve a scintilla of blame for creating these conditions. That was TFG and all TFG who signed the agreement to leave Afghanistan long before Biden was in office. Biden kept the agreement because America’s word, however misguided, meant something to Joe.
And look at that, WaPo: none of our soldiers were hurt in the attack. Because none of them were there.
Nothing will change until we take dark money and corporate money out of politics and campaigning.
As long as the oil companies can donate as much as they want to get the legislative outcomes they want, there will be no investment in alternative fuels for anything, whether that be transportation or home heating or whatever.
F’rinstance, we’re all aware that the oil companies have profited mightily over the last several months and put the economy at risk in doing so. Their profits will be plowed into, not new research or new drilling, but stock buy backs so they can continue to put pressure on prices.
We all know this. It’s been widely reported. Still, the media blames the administration and gets away with it, because no one is pointing out the obvious.
There’s too much money to be lost by pointing it out. And Politics will be a money game first and foremost until Citizens United is overturned. Period.
There are no alternatives. The pernicious effect of money in politics and business always has and always will be with us. Greed, avarice, ego and ambition will prevent the changes needed both in the laws and societal norms to alter history’s course on the many problems we face as a nation and world. We’re all passengers on a rickety bus, traveling downhill at high speed sans brakes, a drunk driver at the wheel.
Just as an aside… the Supremes almost certainly decided the Citizens United case rightly. I know, it’s everyone’s favorite boogeyman, but, the decision said, basically, you cannot deny someone the right to buy a billboard, just because they can afford it; being wealthy does not rob you of your first amendment rights. I know, that means that the playing field is unlevel, but the playing field was never level.
I know, as a consequence of that decision, people or groups with a lot of money can advertise heavily for their political interests. Okay. Cool. Let’s advertise our political interests.
Thiessen’s is the last gasp of the neocons.
The problem is that rather than lay the blame on Trump, they go after the people they failed to convince to change the (Trump) policy. At bottom their attack on Biden is tactical: since the Trumpists are not persuadable, they have aimed where they think they can still change a few minds.
So the forces of reason get the damage while the lunatics get a free ride.
I would just like the media to point out that, when Congress votes down an alternative energy proposal, they would at least point out how much money those Congresscritters received from the oil and gas industry. People are supposed to know this stuff, but they don’t, because they’re never told.
I’ve said before - each Congresscritter should sport a patch from each industry or company they’ve received money from. At least we’d know who those critters are sincerely representing when they vote against their constituents’ best interests.
