Kagan and Barrett Go to the Hill: Three Takeaways

Originally published at: Kagan and Barrett Go to the Hill: Three Takeaways

Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett made a rare appearance before congressional appropriators Tuesday as the Supreme Court seeks an increased security budget.  Court decisions were off limits during the Senate and House hearings, but the testimony still produced a few striking moments.  1) The Bizarre Power of Politeness Protects Trump From Accountability It…

Sick behavior which is enabled by Trump.

Barrett said that many pizzas and packages sent to the justices’ homes bear the name “Daniel Anderl,” the son of federal Judge Esther Salas who was killed in 2020 by a self-described anti-feminist lawyer looking to kill his mother.

The Supreme Court justices will let us know what we need to know when and if if they think that’s useful. Right now that’s not the case.

They’ve got no time to talk to We the People “ about that. Because. They’re the Supremes!

Today, what they want is taxpayer money. They don’t want ICE to come onto their street. To hell with everyone else.

I think I would have asked Coney Barrett why she feels she deserves more security, given that she has been busy taking away other people’s security and rights. She ruled against Hawaii’s gun control law; is just fine with Kavanaugh stops; has made it measurably harder for women to obtain decent obstetrical and gynaecological care by overturning Roe v. Wade; supported the destruction of VRA. The list goes on and on . . .

If she believes that it’s just fine for everyone to have guns and tot them around in public spaces including hospitals, churches, and schools, then shouldn’t all government spaces also be unreservedly open to those second amendment supporters and their guns? Why does she deserve more security than the rest of the people that reside in the USA – surely she believes in equality under the law?

I hope so ; - )

In the meantime, nobody knows what the law is, apparently.

Our representatives continue to completely fail us, having zero backbone at all. Even with a lifetime appointment Kagan is too cowardly to speak plain truths. Disgusting!

Zero out the courts budget, and investigate Clarence Thomas and Alito for tax evasion and corruption. No more playing kissy face with nazis and crooks.

Unless Kagan had on a “I’m with Stupid →” shirt, I could not care less about any plaintive statements from SC justices about anything.

Ask her why we should trust the word of a liar (her) who lied about Roe v Wade, and a liar who re-writes facts or joins opinions that lie about facts like the football coach prayer?

How to rebuild the justice system now that it has been corrupted (at least more than it was) and debased. Hungary recently went through an institutional dismantling, eventually becoming the worst-performing economy in the EU. Today Hungary’s Defense Minister Romulus Ruzin-Sendi is out doing an apology tour as Hungary tries to get back in EU graces.

One has to wonder what cleaning up the Trump mess will look like. Even if he is neutered by the midterms, Trump or his successor cannot be turned out of office until 2028. How long will it take to restore trust in the US? Anyway, the sooner the US starts mending fences like Hungary, the better for all Americans.

While this was not the best example, I really appreciate when SCOTUS justices, liberal or conservative, make public comments about the court.

Because they always end up making the case for SCOTUS reform better than anyone else.

Insulated, won’t discuss their problems, will not deal with them in the public square.

Krugman sees Trump setting the table for major interference with the 2026 midterms and possibly suspending the election entirely due to, for example, a state of war. This may be overdramatic, but Krugman has a long record of calling crises. He called out the problems with the Asian Paper Tiger economies in 1994 long before others, foreshadowing the 1997 Asian financial crisis. He then redirected the mysterious media speculations back to good old moral hazard and asset bubbles when the crisis hit. Trump is cornered, and sufficiently demented to try anything to save his bacon. He’s nearly at the point where he’s ordering his remaining loyal followers to do everything to keep him in office and exposed to scrutiny without an executive bubble.

Out of a real curiosity, why can’t a pizza shop confirm the desire for a delivery to select homes? I get that giving the home phone number of a politician to a pizza shop isn’t ideal, but their addresses are available, and maybe something in the software to flag an order that alerts law enforcement to check if the order is desired could be done.
