Jury Deliberations Begin In Rittenhouse Trial

Following closing arguments yesterday, the jury in the murder trial of Kyle Rittenhouse — the now 18-year-old Illinois gunman who crossed state lines and killed two men and injured another during racial injustice protests in Wisconsin last year — returns to the courtroom.

That’s not how betting pools work. Pick a timeslot and pay up.

I keep thinking of OJ walking in the criminal trial to be hammered by civil suits, this kid doesn’t have a Heisman to sell, if I were a victim’s family member I would make this kid, his mother, and the purchaser of the weapon pay for eternity

BTW I went to high school with the Browns, it was such a trip to see the younger sister on TV, she was a class behind me, Nicole was a senior when I was a freshman

He’s going to be convicted on lesser charges by Wednesday afternoon. Verdict at 2.47 PM.

Did Black person make the cut?

My understanding is that a Person of Color is on the deliberating jury.

Wow, Defense Attorney Judge Schroeder must have been in his office when that happened.

The prosecution made very compelling final arguments, but I am still not convinced of a conviction. One wonders if the jury sees through the judge tipping the scales.

That’s a pretty white jury, but not necessarily unrepresentative of Kenosha County as a whole. It’s 88% white.

We’ll see what they do. I think the prosecutors did a good job at the closing and at other points in this trial hammering on the weaknesses of the self defense argument. That said, the jury instructions will matter and the GOP has attempted by statute, via things like open carry and stand your ground laws, to water down the common law standard on self defense to make it more permissive for the shooter/assailant.

If this is done by the common law standard, then I think Rittenhouse loses on his self defense claims and is convicted on at lease 1 charge. The thing about the common law is it manages to endure no matter how many times you try to change it by decree or statute. It’s because the common law reflects society’s collective and historical assessment of justness or fairness and arrives at something that we might even call ‘truth’. If the jury simply assesses the facts as presented, they’re likely to agree with the prosecutors on the weakness of the self defense claim. Again, we’ll see.

Yes, After the way the judge handled the case (victims can’t be referred to as victims) I think an acquittal is likely. civil wrongful death suits are perhaps the best was to achieve some measure of justice. Having Rittenhouse’s wages/salary garnished for the rest of his life seems reasonable.

This was not a good look for the Defense. Basically saying, it took 7 shots to kill/maim someone and my client killed two and injured one with fewer. He is efficient.

Rittenhouse, his attorney, and the judge have repaired to the judge’s chambers to prepare their joint statement celebrating the verdict.

It won’t be. Wisconsin has codified the law of self-defense, and the jury instructions appear to adhere closely to the statute.

Depends where they can get lunch from. If it’s Mc Donald’s before lunch.

If it’s Sizzler, definitely after lunch because they’ll be in a food coma.
