I think the defense strategery was to elicit outrageous testimony from Ms. Clifford, and then move for a mistrial because of that testimony. The judge upbraided the defense because they didn’t object to the testimony, but later tried to use it as the basis for a mistrial.
But IANAL, so take it for what it’s worth.

I number of years ago, I went to a panel discussion at The New Yorker Festival called Movies And The Mob. One of the panelists was a mob lawyer, had repped John Gotti, etc. He was incredibly smart, charming, and funny. I wish I could remember his name, but it’s been almost 2 decades.
He said that when he was defending someone accused of whacking someone, his first job was to convince the jury that the person deserved to get whacked.
