Trying to incarcerate the president elect, even for a few minutes, would obligate the Secret Service to neutralize the local police and prison guards.
It’s the image we need. The humiliation would send the fat asshole reeling.

The thing is, Judge Merchan has set up
A real dilemma for Trump. If he shows up on the 10th he gets sentenced as a felon - forever. If he does NOT show up he will be found in contempt again and Merchan puts the whole thing on ice until Trump leaves office. Trump can’t appeal until the case is sentenced.
Merchan wants closure, but not outright dismissal. Trump wants closure via dismissal. That ain’t gonna happen.
If Trump stiffs Merchan the case does not go away and there in no unconditional discharge. Merchan just puts the case on hold and then sentences Trump when he leaves office. My guess is Trump sees SOME jail time related to his contempt of court….in his eighties. Merchan is making a pretty good argument about the wisdom of Trump acknowledging his sin NOW rather than later.
Unfortunately I am guessing that Trump is too stupid and too full of himself to play along. Typical crook.

Well, I guess the old “Justice is blind”, we are all “Equal under the law” rhetoric is just that. Rhetoric.

I read somewhere donnie can do the court appearance remotely. Is this true or does he have to physically be in Merchan’s presence for this bad boy scolding? I really had hoped for a bit of jail time for donald.

This part of what Merchan is doing is almost free legal advice. He’s saying, “Look, man, I get that you’re going to be President. Take an hour to get this out of the way. I sentence you to no punishment, which I can never go back on, and my part of the case is done. Then, you are free to appeal, and you’ve pretty much stacked the deck to make that work for you, anyway.”

Agree, BUT Trump does not WANT to be found guilty or convicted. He is not a convicted felon until he is sentenced. He doesn’t see Merchan’s offer as a favor. He also thinks he can somehow invalidate the “finder of fact’s” (the jury) judgement because he doesn’t understand the law.
Also, even though Merchan has offered “unconditional discharge”, there are still post conviction consequences for the defendant. He is no longer a first time offender so if he gets prosecuted again, say in Fulton Co. GA, he could well end up in the Big House.
Old racist bastards like Trump do not do well in the Big House.

“Indeed, Defendant has gone to great lengths to broadcast on social media and other forums his lack of respect for judges, juries, grand juries and the justice system as a whole. In the case at bar despite repeated admonitions, this Court was left with no choice but to find the Defendant guilty of 10 counts of Contempt for his repeated violations of this Court’s Order Restricting Extrajudicial Statements.”
10 counts! IANAL, but it seems to me that by the 10th count, if not sooner, Judge, you could have put his sorry ass in jail for a spell. How many felony defendants rack up 10 counts of contempt and don’t spend any time in jail?

It’s all fear. Every bit of it. We’ve been cowed in every corner by the President-elect and his minions. Had Merchan done this, it would’ve been appealed all the way to SCOTUS who would’ve said, let him out, he’s the King.
I fully expect any sentence Merchan passes to be interfered with, whether they can or not, by SCOTUS, just because they’re bought and paid for by the felon.

Again, as much as I sympathize, Trump was elected to the presidency. You can’t have the president confined to prison. You can’t have the president-elect, even, confined in the days leading up to taking office. It just doesn’t work. The will of the national electorate has to be more important than the power of a district court.
Merchan had the option of sentencing before that was a reality. He gets no pass from me.

In his 18-page decision, Judge Juan M. Merchan wrote that he sought to balance competing interests: Trump’s ability to govern “unencumbered” by the case, the U.S. Supreme Court’s July ruling on presidential immunity, the public’s expectation “that all are equal and no one is above the law” and the importance of respecting a jury verdict, according to an Associated Press report.
When asked for his perspective, Pfluger was direct: “This guy is a partisan hack.”
“There’s no question in my mind that this is a political move, and that just really reduces our trust and faith in these institutions.”
Spouting your biased take to the press couldn’t possibly be the actions of a political hack, could it?
