Judge Repeatedly Reminds Lawyers Trump Will Be Treated Like Any Criminal Defendant

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a protective order on Friday related to the massive trove of discovery materials Donald Trump and his legal team are expected to receive — as soon as Friday — from the government as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s Jan. 6 criminal case.

Prediction: Aside from the fact that he’ll violate this order, it is also going to absolutely freak him out. Because “special treatment” is how he’s made it through his 76 foul years. Being treated like any other defendant will absolutely terrify him.

We’ll see, my prediction is she’s all talk.

The other January 6th defendants currently serving time would beg to differ.

Gee, I hope they don’t treat TFG as he advocated treating those who were criminally charged…

That’s a really cute kitten. Thanks.

She can’t put him in jail but the threat to speed up the trial is his worst nightmare. Smart lady.

but added a clause to her order that said Trump would be required to review information without any electronic devices that can be used to make copies of the material.

And there is zero mechanism to enforce this if counsel is not present (and not much more even if they were).

Yes she can.

Not likely it will happen but it is 100% in her power to do so.

If this defendant can’t run his mouth, will he be able to maintain his own existence? That’s pretty much all he’s got.

Of course it is that goes without saying. Never happening.

I would think that for the review of sensitive material someone has to “give him” the materials to review. He could, at that point be searched for electronics.

Of course depending on who is in his Secret Service detail a phone/camera
might get slipped to him…

Brilliant…

Tying the trial date to Trump’s behavior.

Who says she can’t put him in jail?

Judge Chutkin isn’t playing here. I expect she’ll haul his fat ass into her courtroom very soon and dress him down first… she could also restrict his use of social media - forcing any posts to be pre-cleared by his legal team.

I suggest you give up now. Maybe emigrate.

Beaten about the head and shoulders until he confesses? That seems appropriate strangely enough.

That reminds me of the anecdote that various lawyers who dealt with Trump got in the habit of talking with him in pairs because he would flat-out lie about the outcome of any meeting if there was only one person in the room with him. He’s completely untrustworthy and I really don’t think the judge should have been so accommodating, though perhaps this would limit some future appeal angle.

Judge Chutkin: “I will not tolerate a carnival atmosphere.”

Lauro: “But your honor, my client’s a clown!”
