Yeah, chief judges don’t get to review other district court judges’ decisions in the federal courts. Presumably, this is a magistrate judge’s ruling on a dispositive motion (i.e., a motion for default judgment) that the district court judge referred to the magistrate for recommendation.

I do wish that reporters on legal matters would bother to educate themselves on the basics of judicial organization and authority. It’s not complicated, yet they screw it up all the time.

Anglin seems to be lingering somewhere outside of the United States at the moment, failing to show up to court.

I wonder if this jackass is aware of the irony that he’s celebrating Trump’s call for people of color “to go back where they came from” while he himself is lingering somewhere outside of the country and apparently unable to come home? Nah, I doubt it.

There are a few reporters like Adam Liptak on The Times, or Linda Greenhouse, the former Times reporter assigned to the Supreme Court, who really do learn about the process and procedure. But most of them bounce from city council or state legislature committee hearings to the courts, to covering the latest YouTube star.

A federal judge in Montana decided Monday that Daily Stormer founder Andrew Anglin owes real estate agent Tanya Gersh more than $14 million

So, most of these dildos are trailer park trash, literally, with barely enough money to maintain a computer and pay the annual cost for their URL. The money looks really neat, but will never be collected and won’t do a damn thing for Ms. Gersh. This seems like a clear case of shouting fire in a crowded theater with Ms. Gersh as a door mat at the emergency exit. Shutting down the company that hosts Anglin’s web site and giving him some prison time is the real solution.

Yet they rarely have any problems correctly describing the structures of non-judicial governmental bodies. Nobody ever mistakes a subcommittee for a legislature. For some reason, however, reporters rarely bother to learn what a “magistrate judge” is, seem think there might be a difference between a “district court” and a “trial court,” and (going local here) regularly report that Dallas has a “Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.”

I live in Dallas. We have both a mayor and a city manager (with the latter being far more powerful, despite being an unelected position – being mayor is like being president without any managerial authority over the executive branch). The local reporters rarely, if ever, describe their respective authority or duties. But they never mistake them for each other or misdescribe who is responsible for what.
