A federal judge denied a request by the Ohio Democratic Party to block a voter purge the state plans to implement this Friday.
Quelle surprise.
There are Judges, then there are partisan political hacks appointed by Republicans.
fighting is but only one way to address these issues
want them to knock this shit off? Then use their tactics against them.
sue to purge every geriatric from Ohio’s red districts that you can find, there are whole VA hospitals that can be disenfranchised by something like this, I know, I did the census in them in 2010
none of this is nice and not advocating for it, but their side does not play nice, and nice is getting this side second place all of the time
I know that every single trick Rs play with voting has always got the house edge built in for them. Any hurdles to voting, any friction you can cause is supposed to hurt liberals.
But as long as this was strictly, fairly enforced and applied absolutely equally to both parties…does it hurt liberals more? Could it backfire and blow up if we see a 10 year run of fervent Dem GOTV? I am always stunned that the laziest, stoopidest, least civically minded and intransigent assholes (Rs) get out to vote like crazed demons. Really? Actually making them work for it…voter IDs and skipping elections penalties and having to re-register isn’t going to swell their ranks.
Though these Voter ID laws often “Grandfather” in statistically conservative voters by including forms of ID that older, whiter voters are more likely to already possess, while disallowing equivalent IDs that younger, less white voters may possess.
Apparently, Ohio justice is (deaf, dumb and) blind.
Do you think they’d be doing it if it didn’t?
There are more barriers, by design, to younger folks voting, who trend more liberal. Thus those folks are the most likely to miss a cycle or two and get caught up in this.
Reliable “Keep Government Hands Off My Medicare” Republican Granny has only Bingo planned for election days, so she’s got all the time in the world to go vote.
Right. I know all the angles they are playing, and I would be willing to bet Rs won’t strip the rolls fairly…and if Ds were running the state and had to abide by this… would do it more fairly.
I am just making an argument that they (Rs) might get too handsy with all this crap. They are now reliant almost completely, on the dumbest people in the barrel. Buford might not be able to follow along.
Or D’s wouldn’t strip the roles at all.
It’s OT but I like how BoJo is being handled.
Parliament has pulled the rug out from under him, and Mr. Johnson is at risk of falling into the same Brexit quagmire that dragged down his predecessor as prime minister, Theresa May.
I can tell you that here in Ohio my 86 year old mom was VERY upset to be told that her 86 year old birth certificate wasn’t “good” enough for the Ohio enhanced ID law. She’s still pissed. She won’t be the only one. She votes. Democrats, Which is great, but she thinks the state has lost its damn mind.
ETA because which is spelled with a wh.
Going to be messy. The Conservatives can still pull out of an election with a win, due to how their shit is allocated, similar to our gerrymandered crap.
And Corbyn is a disaster, so no guarantees that he could actually put together a coalition.
That’s good. Why we rely on pieces of paper to “prove” people’s provenance.
Should make a national DNA database, verify parentage and that people are actually citizens and such.
Bet there would be lots of surprises…
I understand. The Dems would roll it back. But there will be times when Dems take back over a state that has these laws and practices on the books. If they were allowed to TRULY trim the deadweight during that first big election cycle before their rollback took effect…wouldn’t this cut both ways?
As a science experiment…this one seems less likely to be completely successful for the Rs.
Them going after college campuses, blanket purges, zip code searches, young voters, new voters, registration drives…yes it all hurts Dems. But this particular measure, in conjunction with other hurdles to getting back ON the rolls seems to hurt the lazy people more than the diligent and energized. I am just hypothesizing a way this could bounce back on them…say when your candidate is a Chump and your entire party is disgraced beyond all reckoning…a few years from now when they try to get their ass back in the game they find they can’t just walk into a precinct. When your below-retirement-age voters are incels living in parents basements, eightchan lurkers, Q members, and white nationalist/militia/klan members…maybe you don’t register as often or have an address that holds up for long.
But still can play a mean pinball.
For certain.
I’m just guessing there will be a while lotta white people not used to their citizenship being questioned for no good reason. Maybe it will give them pause, at least for a moment, if they realize what it means to live in fear.
A dear nephew and niece who live in a London suburb are coming to visit next week. I think if we start on Brexit we’ll talk about nothing else. They’re both opposed to it because they love the UNITED Kingdom. Doubt they’re in this crowd but they could have been
Yup. Who’s to say you weren’t switched at birth… Or maybe immigrant Mommy has a secret from Daddy and you never had birthright citizenship…
Yeah…do you have the medical bills to prove you were born here?
