Jordan Tries Again To Dunk On Manhattan DA - TPM – Talking Points Memo

House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has doubled down on his intent to investigate Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg as he seeks to block the prosecutor from potentially bringing a case against Donald Trump.

Is obstruction of justice not a crime anymore? How are these threats at all within his duties as a congressman?

Republican mantra; Federalism and States Rights!

Except when TFG is involved.

Gym has no authority over the Manhattan DA investigating potential violations of New York law.

@txlawyer will correct me if needed.

I have no expertise on congressional oversight authority vis a vis local district attorneys, but I can affirm that Gym Jordan is remarkably dumb.

ETA: I have a vague recollection of some SCOTUS precedent to the effect that federal courts are not to be used to preempt local prosecutions from proceeding, and I expect that the same principle would apply to Gym Jordan.

Bragg had sent Jordan a letter last week saying that, as a federal committee chair, he had no authority to interfere in a state investigation. Jordan has replied that he wants the House to consider legislation to “insulate current and former presidents from such improper state and local prosecutions”– a continuation of the monarchist-tinged arguments that attorneys for Trump flung at investigators while he was in office.

Nixon attorney James St. Clair, to DC District Court Judge John Sirica:

“The President wants me to argue that he is as powerful a monarch as Louis XIV, only four years at a time, and is not subject to the processes of any court in the land except the court of impeachment.” – United States v. Nixon, 418 U.S. 683 (1974)

Gym Jordan continues to prove daily—sometimes hourly—what a deeply stupid man he is.

And he’s trapped himself in his own dumpster fire with no chance of extinguishing it.

The 21st Century version of the GOP certainly seems to be in agreement with St. Clair’s argument to Judge Sirica……except only for Trump and, maybe, other GOP Presidents. They apparently did not feel that way about POTUS Obama. Maybe because he was black ?

There is a new paper out analyzing the change in the electorate and its preferences since 1980 in today’s Electoral-Vote.com. It states that Carvill’s observation “It’s the economy, stupid !” has been replaced by “it’s racism, stupid !”

It seems that the ReThugs “MAGA” slogan really mean’s they want to hang people of color from trees AGAIN, and with impunity. It doesn’t get much simpler than that and it explains a lot of the madness and blood lust we just witnessed in Waco.

Trump looks like a giant and everyone else looks small and weak.

While I agree with others that Jordan in this looks remarkably stupid, Trump looks like a genius.

To Jordan looking stupid:

Jordan added. “For example, a President could choose to avoid taking action he believes to be in the national interest because it would negatively impact New York City for fear that he would be subject to a retaliatory prosecution in New York City.”

I would like Jordan to explain how paying off a woman to keep quite about your having sex with her affect the national interests. Maybe Jordan’s interest but the national interests, that is not only really stupid but sort of funny.

As to Trump being a genius:

In a reply to House Republicans’ letters, the general counsel for Bragg’s office noted that the inquiry only came after Trump himself set up the expectation that his indictment was imminent, writing that it “only came after Donald Trump created a false expectation that he would be arrested the next day and his lawyers reportedly urged you to intervene.”

Think what Trump has done by lying about being indicted. He has gotten the entire Republican Party to fall in line including would be challengers for the 2024 nomination. Worse, he has media figures, including many liberal media figures saying the first indictment should not be from using campaign funds to pay hush money to a porn star.

It is another example of pushing off someone doing something about Trump’s criminality to someone else and as a result Trump gets a free pass.

So Trump has succeeded at getting the rest of the GOP to look small compared to Trump and at the same time getting the media, including liberals in the media, to argue against Trump for the first time being held accountable for his criminal actions.

In my never ending quest to get people to stop using double down wrong, I’d like to point out that you double down when you have a substantial advantage over the casino, which is rare. What these guys are doing is double or nothing, which is what you do when you are desperate…

Netanyahu is showing the World what our Country would be like if Trump was reelected.

Gym believes he is paving the way for Trump but does not know how.
He thinks or hopes if he could just pin the DA and he would win the match and Trump’s respect.

Gym does as told. His kompromat well-known.
Still waiting for Clooney’s documentary bomb to go off.

The untitled documentary is based on an October 2020 Sports Illustrated story by Jon Wertheim that detailed some of the many allegations against Strauss, including those made by former All-American wrestler and UFC champion Mark Coleman and other athletes, student trainers and employees at a private clinic Strauss headed. Coleman also alleges that Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio State assistant wrestling coach for part of Strauss’ time at the university, knowingly ignored Strauss’ abuse.

The entire grand jury is in session today. They all walked into Bragg’s office this morning.

Time for Bragg to get this indictment on the books.

Tx, I’ve been reading Roger Parloff’s Proud Boy Trial Diary on Lawfare.

He seems to think the Proud Boys have good legal representation. (They sure don’t have much to work with!)

Do you have any idea how much these lawyers are getting paid, and how their work is paid for? Aside from the months spent on trial, they are flying in (terrible) witnesses and presumably paying staff for research, etc.

I’ve been wondering about this for days. Thanks.
