Out of all the reasons to decry Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) inflammatory and conspiracy-ridden remarks, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) is instead shaking in his boots over … taking disciplinary action against Greene supposedly setting up a slippery slope for “cancel culture”?
Jordan doubled down on his argument that “every single American is at risk” of losing their First Amendment rights.
“If this goes forward, that is one more blow to the First Amendment. That should scare every single American,” Jordan said. “This is wrong and you guys know it is wrong and the whole country knows it is wrong. That is why we should not stand for it.”
Jordan jumped on that strawman like it was a college wrestler in the shower.
Pretty much the same argument against gun regulation and host of other right-wing shibboleths – its a slippery slope, where will it end – but, of course, reich-wing pugilists like Jordan don’t make that kind of argument when they suppress the vote or break the guardrails between democracy and authoritarianism.
Always said, the “slippery slope” argument means the person making it got nuttin’. He or she can’t make a halfway plausible argument against the thing being proposed, but oh my, they clutch their pearls at the thought of how disastrous it might be if the thing were carried to absurd lengths (checks notes) it will never be carried to.
It’s the newest move from the Trump playbook that well known, “I’m not responsible”.
This is part that pisses me off.
“No one is condoning the remarks she has made. I’ve not heard any Republican say that is appropriate,” Jordan said. “That is not the issue.
Ah yes Gym it is the part and parcel of the issue. Where has the public rebuke of MTG’s comments and actions been made? How many of you showed up to counsel her behavior towards appropriate behavior for someone getting paid by the US taxpayers? And maybe the answer is, just like the consequences for going around the metal detectors, MTG should have her paycheck docked until such time that she makes a public apology, or hell explains her position on publicly commenting or liking a comment that calls for killing a member of Congress. Make her explain in public if she does or doesn’t believe that shootings at New Town and Parkland were real, and individuals died. If she’s not going to say sorry then she has to defend her thesis.
Imma try the clappy hands things the kids are into these days. I’m also going to use “imma” which I understand is hip lingo.
This is not a First Amendment Issue!
Is she being arrested for speech? No? Consequences for her job only, in accordance with Article I of the Constitution? Well Jim, you should STFU, STFD, and GBTW.
Jordan makes a good (in some vague sense of good) point. Remove Greene from her committee assignments, and next thing you know, Republicans will be demanding that Schiff be removed from chairing the Intelligence committee.
