Back from vacation, Jon Stewart on Monday was delighted to dig into the fallout over Mitt Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital. Did Romney retire from the firm in 1999, as he claims? Or was it as late as 2001, when Romney listed on SEC documents his principal occupation was owner and CEO of the private equity firm? Romney claims he had nothing to do with the firm at that time, because he was in Salt Lake City running the Winter Olympics.Stewart tried to paraphrase the Republican candidate’s defense: “I was just the guy with the smoke-screenish, yet still legal, title of CEO and managing director, who was paid at least $100,000 a year to do what, according to me, Mitt Romney, was nothing. And that’s the kind of common-sense business experience I hope to bring to the White House.”
