Choking up, Ellis told Judge McAfee that she trusted “lawyers with many more years of experience than me to provide me with true and reliable information” about wrongdoing in the 2020 election.
She then admitted that she had received wrong information, and that she had “failed” to do due diligence.
You know what? The moment she said that they should have rescinded the plea deal. She isn’t accepting responsibility. She was one of the bad actors, but the weasel is pretending that it was just that she was misled and it wasn’t her fault. The problem wasn’t “due diligence” it was her and the others creating baseless lies from scratch and spreading them in attempt to overturn the election results she absolutely knew to be valid. She was awful then, she’s awful now.
It’s the old carrot-and-stick approach. Light sentence if she testifies truthfully and fully, and gives up any remaining receipts. Otherwise not so much.
I think that one of Josh’s long-ago comments is apposite here: many of the defendants have likely lost track of all the criming they did and who was present when they did it. So each flip freaks them out even more, because they don’t know the full ramifications.
?The irony is delicious served up with unwavering side of determination to see justice done in GA and NY. Power Black women bringing down the beast is a sight to behold. Am I right?
I think it’s unlikely they actually bought it. They were hired by Trump to overturn the election and they tried to figure out ways to do that, starting by amplifying baseless lies.
I know in my head that these are light sentences in part to attract others to accept plea deals and hopefully because they’re giving up workable info, but my heart is worried that we’ll soon read that Trump accepted a deal for five years probation and an apology letter.
I very much doubt it. She can testify about Rudy, but Rudy’s crimes were largely committed in public and/or witnessed by other people who haven’t been charged with anything. I don’t recall Ellis as having ever been in any meetings with trump or being read into the J6 assault on the Capitol. So she can testify about the fake electors and the false testimony to the state lege, but it’s unlikely she has the keys to the kingdom.
Keep in mind that almost all of what Fulton County has charged is misdemeanors or minor felonies. The only real risk of serious jail time is the state RICO charge, about which I remain highly dubious. So yeah, almost any plea deals are going to be for minimal or no jail time.
To your point, we all know that in the American system of “justice”, too often justice has very little to do with how matters proceed. I have faith that Ms. Willis knows a good deal when she offers one, but I do share your pain …
