Jeffries Sums Up Last Week: America Will Continue To Be ‘Held Captive’ By ‘Extreme MAGA Republican Agenda’

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said the concessions Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) made to the MAGA-infused conservative holdouts in order to become speaker is “just the beginning” of “dysfunction” for the GOP-led 118th Congress, summing up well the new reality we all witnessed chaotically unfolding on the House floor last week.

A lot of Dem leaning voters who split tickets or didn’t vote have enabled this extreme House. While Dems had a very strong midterm, bucked a lot of historic trends and increased the size of their reliable base, Dems really just dropped the ball in some very winnable races. You have to vote Dem in every election to end this cycle of extremism.

Even with all the doom-saying by panicky people regarding the antics anticipated from House GOP, I think we should also lay in popcorn and whiskey so we can fully enjoy 2 years of Hakeem Jeffries beating the absolute living shit out of Gym Jordan and any other MAGAt dumb enough to try him.
Bruce too fast to see

Personally I think the next two years will be the end of MAGA and the performative Congressional personalities embodying their version of nihilism. When they threaten the world economy if the Democrats don’t go along with their wish list they are going to reap the whirlwind.

Jeffries isn’t wrong. And it’s only a matter of time before the full force of this captivity begins to hit the American people.

Unless, of course, gerrymandering gets in the way, prohibiting any Dem to win a segmented district. This will continue until gerrymandering is rendered illegal, which isn’t happening en masse any time soon.

" … just our first, real, public peek into the humiliation that awaits McCarthy."

“And I can’t think of a more deserving bastard,” he added.

Meanwhile, MAGA goes international (Brazil) and we all (voters in gerrymandered districts) just let it all happen.

“We can agree to disagree without being disagreeable.”

When dealing with the MAGA Congressional Nihilists that is an assertion without any evidentiary foundation.

Questions: Did McCarthy have the independent authority to fully grant all of the concessions to the MAGAts as a condition of his becoming Speaker, or are they, or any of them, subject to the voting approval of the entire House?? What is the difference between “the rules” that require voting approval and the independent authority of the office of the Speaker?

Arguably the US Supreme Court gave then 3, when they let some racist gerrymanders sit in the south.

Andrew Coumo gave away the few others to get to 218.

Nevermind the OH, WI, FL partisan Gerrymanders etc.

All things considered, like usual Democratic drop off in midterms, especially first in a presidency, 2022 was a huge success.

Surely this is true, but polling was all noise, very little signal, prioritization decisions were always going to be tough.

Those who didn’t understand this before the speaker vote shitshow will surely understand after that same shit keeps playing out

ETA: also each new set of young voters need to continually learn this. The newbies will see the importance. That why, the older you ate the more likely you vote…

Last week’s circus was just our first, real, public peek into the humiliation that awaits McCarthy.

I guess it’s good for Qevin that he’s inured to degradation.
For the rest of us, the consensus seems to there won’t be much coming out of this Congress except fpr the kind of clown show a lot of us were deadened to after the first two years of Donnie.

My biggest fear is the certainty that the MAGats will hold the nation hostage again with a government shutdown over the debt ceiling. What that does is set up a horrible negotiation to avoid throwing the nation into effective bankruptcy, as with what Obama experienced. Except this time, there are no adults in opposition leadership. The crazies have completely taken over the GOP. So the brinkmanship will be more real, and the demands more insane.

Yes, we hold the higher ground on this, but here the metaphor is more about getting into the muck; the battle will have to be fought low. And opponents of rationality have a near monopoly in that arena.
So expect some ugly concessions to transpire.

I think that the their performative art will get stale quickly.

Yes, but the reaction from the general public will be to ignore it.

It will likely take the performative BS to get dangerous for many ylto notice (i.e. Government shutdown, default, fucking with social security)

I believe the rules package needs to be approved by the House.
I read an article that there is a secret agreement between Qevin and the insurrectionists that he will use his office to grant them various favors in conjunction with the passage of the rules package.
This seems to have caused some disaffection amongst non-MAGAt reactionaries; although, whether or not that will have any consequences is an open question.

So what are we going to do, surrender to the nihilists? I would rather see a serious recession than surrender to Gym Jordan and the Republican crazies.

I think by withholding our attention to their antics, it will force them to act up more. Thus pushing the Republicans, or the vocal subset of Republicans to be more extreme.
Maybe we should consult some parenting books on how to deal with unruly children?
