Off subject here. Sometimes wishes come true. Space X latest rocket launch exploded showering debris over parts of Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean. Saw on Weather Channel this morning. It was even visible from Miami. Under a normal FAA this would mean an indefinite halt and a thorough investigation. Not happening.

No, we can’t know simply from your reading list what you believe. The reading list of a sociologist who studies child development and child sexual abuse would be appalling.
If you want to know what the sociologist is really like, you need to read their own work–or better, get to know the person.
We can judge someone by their action, and Vance’s have been pretty uniformly disgusting.
Don’t lie with half-truths. The “racial IQ gap” is pseudo-scientific nonsense, and has been for over 200 years.
- IQ tests are inherently culturally biased.
- H. sapiens is genetically much less diverse than would ordinarily be expected.
- To the extent that racial differences have been documented, the group differences are swamped by the individual variation.
So, in summary: we have no reliable instrument for assessing what you claim to want to measure. Any differences that are found are more likely attributable to environmental differences than genetic differences. And finally, even if the premise is granted, the magnitude of the differences among groups has essentially no predictive value. This isn’t Brave New World, with Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons.

Hillbilly Elegy is an origin story, and needs to be read as such. His moral (and the reason he blames the Middletown Hillbillies (and by extension, all of the socio-economic troubles of Appalachia) for their troubles is: I got out. Why don’t you?
What he ignores is the role that Dame Fortuna played in his getting out. Suppose he doesn’t get admitted to Yale Law, and goes to Capitol University Law in Columbus, OH instead? He sure as hell doesn’t hook up with Peter Theil in that event. Hillbilly Elegy is a self-published memoir if it’s written at all. He never becomes Senator and Vice President Vance, because there’s no Peter Thiel to fund his Senate campaign.
Play his story back from leaving the Marine Corps with one seemingly trivial tweak and he ends up someplace else entirely.
History is contingent. Or as I told my cousin when he asked me about luck and probability, “Fortune favors the prepared. You need to be ready to make the most of the opportunities that are presented to you.”
