Jan. 6 Panel Walks Back Thompson’s Comment About No Trump Criminal Referrals

A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.

House Jan. 6 Committee chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) told reporters on Monday that the committee won’t be making criminal referrals against Trump or his other cronies to the Justice Department because “that’s not our job”–but that was apparently news to the other committee members.

I could almost imagine that the “walk back” was a planned strategy — Thompson the Dem says, no, we won’t be referring, and Liz the R says, hey, wait not so fast, we might be.

A spin-off of “good cop, bad cop” — where the GOPer makes the “threat”.

This is really good
At a debate today, Lindsey Graham laughed off a warning from Bernie Sanders about the danger of “authoritarianism” brought on by Trump’s “Big Lie.”

I dunno, me, I wouldn’t have planned to do that. I think that’s something he should have checked on with everyone before he opened his mouth. That’s how the cool kids do it.

In other news (not really news) Trump has issued forth a 12-page collection of gobbledeygook in response to our favorite select committee’s flensing of him. It’s about what you’d expect. Blah blah blah distraction from the starving babies yadda yadda. He doesn’t really directly address how he’s full of shit in literally everything he ever says.

He’s working harder hating the committee than he ever did as president.

Hey, kayleigh, did you also keep a lie-brary of his lies? What system did you use to catalog so many volumes?

Nash’s dissertation on game theory was only 26 pages.

(Two citations, one was to a paper he wrote.)

Watson and Crick’s paper on the structure of DNA was just a single page in Nature.

I guess Trump’s paper falls between them in importance and scholarship.

In the meantime I’m seeing great coverage of the committee’s work. It’s filtering out into the bloodstream and sticking, and not in a he-said she-said way. When you have Barr noping out of the whole deal, saying we told him and told him, that’s fatal. And Georgia’s lieutenant governor has an op-ed on CNN calling Trump a “political falling knife.” Devastating. Oh, and in other news, Trump wants to launch a 2024 bid in Florida outside DeSantis’s house. The fun never ends!

  • Except there’s at least one “weakness” in the Uvalde officers’ response to the shooting that’s already been [well established] The officers not doing anything to stop the gunman."
So true, but what they need to do and won’t, is what other nations have done after their one and only mass shooting, show photos of the victims and the carnage done to them. And don’t tell us this is too graphic when you consider the schlock put out by Hollywood.
