Jan. 6 Panel Hits Back At McCarthy’s ‘Baseless’ Claims About Trump | Talking Points Memo

Reps. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Liz Cheney (R-WY) — who serve as the chair and vice chair of the Jan. 6 select committee, respectively — pushed back at House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) “baseless” claims of former President Trump being cleared of any involvement in the deadly Capitol insurrection.

“Consciousness of Guilt”:

“It refers to a powerful and highly incriminating inference that a judge or jury may draw from the statements or conduct of a defendant (accused) after a crime has been committed suggesting that the defendant knows he or she is guilty of the charged crime.”

So where did Reuters get this report?

Who are their sources?

This is why we can’t get any traction on this - too many are just eating away at the foundation, making it easier to blame all this on the Dems before the truth gets out.

It’s like when a Republican Congressman gets arrested and Fox puts a “D” after their name and makes a 2am correction no one hears…

Doubtful… Not sure Mccarthy knows enough about WWII to know Hiltler invaded Poland… or enough about geography to point out Germany or Poland on a map…

Ex-Trump admin DOJ-ers and current FBI maga apologists, as far as I can tell. Whoever they are, they’re absolute denialists about how the current DOJ is actually charging people. They’re all, like, “Sedition? No way anybody is getting charged with sedition. Obstructing an official proceeding? Never heard of it.”

This move by Reuters reminds of Billy Barr’s whitewash of the Mueller Report.
Since it doesn’t have the imprimatur of officialdom, I doubt that the claim will survive the pushback from the January 6th Commission. At least not amongst those who aren’t pining for the release of all those political prisoners arrested for touring the Capitol.

OT but important:

raise your hand if you'd like to see Kevin McCarthy testify under oath in front of Congress on live television for 11 straight hours to explain just what the fuck is in those phone records that he so desperately wants to keep hidden

Way back in the fading memory of 1-6 the DOJ and FBI were still under the direction of TFG. Any report that came out of that era was thoroughly trumped up by the shills in charge. Now they belong to the ages.

Kev is trying to get the lie out there and ‘accepted’ as fact before people call him out. He ‘thinks’ it shows leadership.

I think resumed hearings will be very important. I hope Dick Cheney and other former Sec Defs appear and explain the chatter they were hearing that led them to publish their public letter a few days before January 6 warning that the election was over and that there was no role for the military in deciding the election.

Here’s the thing about TrumpWorld and Qevin (or any Trumpist claim):

They do not care whether the Reuters “report” (or any “report” which helps them) is true or not. They only care if it works. In point of fact, if it’s false and works anyway, so much the better.

Don’t worry. We’ll get plenty of traction when there are more hearings. There will also be trials coming late this year and well into next year, and those being tried will be those who committed the most serious offenses. This isn’t a thing that’s just going to go away. It’s one of those news stories that will die down for a moment and then keep coming back over and over again. The stupidest thing Qevin could’ve done was to pull all of his people from the commission, so he has to do things like this and hope nobody follows up. It’s literally all they’ve got.
