Jan. 6 Panel Blasts Trump’s ‘Attempt To Delay And Obstruct’ Probe With Suit | Talking Points Memo

House Jan. 6 select committee chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and vice chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) hit back at ex-President Donald Trump on Monday evening after he filed a lawsuit attempting to block the committee from obtaining documents from the National Archives.

I’m no fan of Liz Cheney, but I am damned glad she is on this committee and taking the hard line.

(I am not convinced this is merely because she has an ethical bone or two in her body, but rather I think this is fully calculated and she is looking much further down the road and is preparing for after the implosion, where she and a few others will stand pretty unblemished by Trumpism as a result of her distancing now.)

We’ll know when she asks daddy to invite some people to go duck hunting

“Precedent and law are on our side,” they said.

Call us when the courts finally side with the committee and Trumpco is forced to cough up everything you’re demanding.

I’ll set a reminder to check back in the fall of 2027.

Considering this committees dithering on holding those defying subpoenas accountable, I have little faith in them doing much now.

Biden could publish all the documents tomorrow but of course is petrified of upsetting the GOP, his worthy bipartisan legislative partners.

I’m glad Cheney’s taking the hard line too, but I’m not so sure it’s for calculated and strategic reasons about the future of the GOP. She has a personal beef with Trump because her life was threatened in the attack on the Capitol. She’s angry at him for inciting the mob and doing nothing to stop it, and she wants Trump and his enablers like McCarthy to pay for it.

Which is fine from our Dem perspective, but I think if she’s reelected she’ll still be a supporter of Trumpist policy in the GOP going forward. Everything but the authoritarianism. Unlike Trump, she just wants to follow the rules as she votes to impose regressive laws on everyone.

They knew Trump would do this … it was as predictable as the sun rise …

So, the question should be - what 6 -7 near term horizon actions did they prepare to respond to this ?

Trump took a step to file this … by doing so, in what way has he created greater exposure for himself? what vulnerabilities have been created or exacerbated ? In what way has he further painted himself into a corner.

Since these items that Trump seek to keep private are presumed to physically be in the hands of the government / administration / archives …somebody ought to know (what is that old lawyer saying - never ask a question that you do not know the answer to?) - is there absolute certainty as to what is in them? … are they worth the fight because of their gross incrimination & exposure of crimes … or are they 99% fluff and simply a bit of a diversion … basically Al Capone’s vault.?

It better damn well be worth the time & energy & resources to conduct the fight - or there had better be a very shrewd way in which Trump’s protracted legal battle to string this out can genuinely be spun around and used to pierce his aorta.

Now, what if Biden requested Trump’s documents and invited Bennie and Liz over for tea, scones and perusal? Nothing “official”; just a morning get-together to discuss the issues of the day. At least, they would have a chance to put their case together while awaiting the court’s decision. Waiting for the Trump appointed judges to judge will take way too long for any possibility of justice to be served. The committee needs to up its game and maybe take a few pointers from the Republican handbook.

When asked why he proposed Britain giving aid to the Soviet Union after Germany invaded it in 1941, Churchill said “If Hitler invaded Hell itself, I would at the very least make a favorable reference to Satan in the House of Commons.”

Yep. Allies are seldom friends. And should never be mistaken for such.

They should just proceed with the suit, which they should win without any obstacles.

If the committee doesn’t win, then we know the deck is stacked and we will hear this guy well beyond his death.

The committee shouldn’t give oxygen to this suit, though. Just proceed with the rest of the findings which are incriminating enough.

exactly … but this should have happened already

Somebody must already know the answer to the question -
is the value of these document essentially what they will reveal ? or is it there simply value in their pursuit and the moves it will cause Trump to make in seeking to stonewall this?

It would seem that Trump & his camp think that the stonewalling is only to Trump’s advantage … but there is the possibility that this becomes a sort of political Jujutsu where Trump lunge to stonewall gets flipped around to decimate him …

Are there any potential consequences for the Biden administration if they just sent the requested documents to Congress right now?

Who are Trump’s attorneys? How does he continually find folks to represent him when he doesn’t pay his bills and has such a crappy case?

Whatever the Committee’s verbal pushback on Trump is, it had better be backed with Legal power.

We have set up the cynics to use this to trash this Committee and what it is doing.

Trump is approaching this (like he was taught to approach business, social encounters, marriage - essentially everything) like WAR …
… a …take no prisoners, scorched earth, loot, rape & pillage and extract brutal vengeance style of WAR

It is imperative that those dealing with any and all matters related to Trump
keep this integrated in to all of their thinking.
All thinking must incorporate a robust & extensive strategic battle plan that looks 5-10 moves ahead.

Fundamentally, Trump has convinced himself that he can win at this … and as absurd as it might seem - what he see as “winning at this” is to lie, cheat, steal, bribe, and kill his way into being the Putin of the USA …
and as insane as it may seem … that is what is in his head - he is convinced that he can do it … it now is his sole reason for living - and he is not going to give it up until he is 6 feet under.

So those who do not want to lose to him better operate like they are at war with him & utilize exceedingly brilliant strategic thinking & planning & attacking actions.

The same tired crew of TV legal prognosticators asserting Trump’s 1/6 suit is a weak crock of crap also have been predicting every other damned legal trap laid for him in the last 20 years would be his final undoing. Yet there he stands, a veritable phoenix risen from the ashes, year after year after year.
