A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo. Sign up for the email version. Appealing To History In blistering court orders, three separate federal judges in Washington, D.C., with an eye toward history decried the dismissals of Jan. 6 cases in the wake of President Trump’s sweeping pardons of…

The gulf of America is the wealth gap? That’s brilliant!

Also, shout out to Jordan Klepper for repeatedly diving into dunce infested waters to expose the basic cognitive dissonance that follows the TCF circus around the country.

While looking at articles about ADL condemning antisemitism and the rise of nazism, I came across this. Worth the read. I saw the reminder that Musk previously threatened to sue the ADL for finding the algorithm that ads from major advertisers on neo-nazi content. Up until 2 weeks before the election, they were still speaking out loud and strong. I suppose supporting the salute was in lieu of the $1 million to the inaugural fund.

And an interesting take on Musk buying X. He didn’t buy something and destroy it. He bought it and it’s doing exactly what he wanted - giving him constant attention.

Meanwhile, in Wisconsin (from the article)

Elsewhere, Sam Kuffel, a meteorologist at CBS58 in Milwaukee, was dropped by the station one day after sharply criticizing Musk’s salute on Instagram; the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has the story.

She made two posts. But it was CBS, so…

I wish I could make some dark jokes, or get worked up into outrage, but all I feel is sadness tinged with fear on this bitter January morning.

Here’s Oscar.

Is it worth pointing out that the three judges with such scathing responses were women? Weren’t there any male judges who also felt compelled to respond, or are they just to scared?

I love that people who have been whining that they can’t keep up with what “they” want to be called (African American? Black? Gay? LGBTQ? and so on) now have no trouble with renaming things.
I for one, fear that I am not woke enough to remember the new names. I will likely still refer to the Gulf as the Gulf of Mexico, Mount McKinley will remain Mount Denali, and the recently released terrorists who have been pardoned by their lord and savior will remain treasonous scum.

Notice how the three judges are all women?

He went through four years of hell because he occasionally spent a day in court?

What a wimp.

ETA And until I see records of invoices and payments and tax statements I will totally disregard his claims of spending millions.

To expand, what a whining wimp.

the Gulf of America

The felon president has ordered herein forthwith and evermore for the Atlantic Ocean to be known as the American Ocean.

And henceforth, the Pacific shall also be named the American Ocean.

I will note today that for the first time in what seems forever, my Bloomberg top new feed (the four articles Bloomberg thinks are most important at the moment) does not include the word “Trump”. Are we done with shock and awe?

Amid Democratic disunity in both chambers, the House gave final passage to the anti-immigration Laken Riley Act, which now heads to President Trump signature.

I have finally succumbed to information overload. Can someone point me to a good explanation of what this legislation does, and the illegal action it permits? And then explain why on earth Democrats supported it. Have not followed it because it made no sense and would only raise my blood pressure.

“In all three instances, the judges had no choice under the law but to grant the dismissals.” (David Kurtz)

Judge Howell (I don’t know about the other two judges) dismissed the case(s?) but made a point of dismissing it (them?) without prejudice. In theory, the charges could be brought again.

I’m so refulgent with free-speechiness, I’m about to burn out my retinas.

Brilliant indeed.

On a more mundane note, how does one nation that borders on an international body of water unilaterally rename said body of water? Is there no international guild of cartographers with jurisdiction over such matters? Which Trumpworld would ignore anyway, but still.
