The House Jan. 6 select committee is already preparing to make good on its threat to hold former White House senior adviser Steve Bannon in criminal contempt ahead of his scheduled hearing on Thursday, according to CNN.
Just thinking out loud: Why doesn’t Bannon just show up to testify and claim the 5th? He could submit the requested documents redacted as well. Why does he think that the former still has the authority to tell people what to do or say?
I’d like to know just how this clown can claim executive privilege without knowing exactly what they’re going to talk to him about? It’s a Jan 6 affair…that took place long after he left office with Trump. Can he do that? I’m not arguing the fact that exec privileged is generally ridiculous in his case…it is…but on that specific point. How can he know he’ll be quizzed on what might fit privilege?
No, wait …it is ‘throw it against the wall and see if it sticks. He must think that he is very important and he doesn’t have to comply with anything or anyone.’
Now you can insert the name of whoever you want and it will make sense.
Hey, Tex? (Can I call you Tex?) Since Bannon’s refusal to comply is by his lawyer’s own admission predicated on a request by the former President that he fail to comply, how hard would we have to stretch the law to charge him with Conspiracy to Obstruct Congress. I mean, we have the plan, (published by both parties), and the overt act in furtherance of the plan. Are we there, yet?
That’s the conventional reason, but in Bannon’s case I think it’s also because an act of defiance in refusing the subpoena is what his podcast audience wants to see. And that’s where his bread is being buttered these days. It’s all performance art, until an actual legal hammer comes down on him (eventually).
In discussions with lawyers, former US attorneys and others, Costello’s knowledge and abilities really come into question. Some even posited if he’d even finish law school based on his advice and responses.
