ROME — Italy’s head of the coronavirus pandemic strategy says the country is prepared for a second wave of infections “even bigger than the first” if its gradual reopening leads to a surge in new cases.
Domenico Arcuri told the lower Chamber of Deputies that Italy’s 20 regions now have twice as many ventilators than currently needed and the 5,200 intensive care beds Italy had before the pandemic had nearly doubled to 9,000.
I pray that the preparation of the Italian people for the second wave is adequate. If their response (such as in social isolation) is not significantly greater than the first wave, then they will find that the extra ICU beds and ventilators will be woefully inadequate. Once the number of patients needing ICU beds/ventilators exceeds the quantity of available ICU beds/ventilators, the death of those patients is almost assured.
The worst case scenario is horrible to talk about, but the only way to produce fewer patients before “herd immunity” or “vaccine” is achieved is through social isolation. The Italians didn’t practice social isolation until the first wave was well underway. Essentially the same thing occurred in New York.
We should be doing the same, but we’re not. I am confused, I am embarrassed to think how far away , Or who we are supposed to be, how far away we have fallen. This whole pandemic has been one big mess caused by one, sorry I can’t find the words to describe the disgusting empty suit squats in our White House what a brainless shameful coward he is
